ADBlock - Block Content, yet another list

, , , ...

Here is another list I've made to use on both "block content" in Opera and ADBlock Plus in Firefox. I tried to avoid too short rules and it is based on the sites I visit so, since the list isn't "generic" as the previous one, it is possible you can still see advertisement on some of your sites. Please tell me and I will add those to the list. Or of course you can do it yourself, the only problem is some times that needs to inspect the page code.
urlfilter-081008.zip
Instructions:
- Opera, you put the urlfilter.ini file in your Opera profile directory. Since it can be different depending on your Windows version, it is up to you to find the directory.
- Firefox, you open the urlfilter.ini file with notepad, select all the rules and paste in ADBlock Plus.

In case you wonder why I made the list instead of using some of the other lists you can find on the Web, that is because those lists are much bigger and bloated than what I actually need for my own personal use. On a side note, ADBlock Plus is more sophisticated than block content in Opera so there is ONE rule I could not use on both because it uses "conditions" in Firefox and the list also misses the CSS blocking that ADBlock Plus handles in the same list via the companion extension Element Hiding Helper. Not a big deal then. CSS hiding was only for some layers opened by inline JS that are not common is "serious" sites.

Heuristics for blocking ads

, , , ...

Again, in case your web browser doesn't have an ads blocking feature or it doens't work well either you don't know how to use it, here it comes a FREE (GPL) nice tool that acts like "web proxy", meaning it stays between the browser and the Internet and heuristically filters the ads from webpages.
Grab it here: http://bfilter.sourceforge.net
Heuristics means the software tries to recognize ads on its own, using "smart detection", instead relying on a blacklist. In theory this means zero configuration by you and the ability of getting new ads, from any unknown site, as they come.

Note: developers needed for the project!

Hitslink statistics fixed and some thoughts about the Internet, blogs and advertisement

, , ,

The good news:
It seems the Hitlinks stats now work correctly. I can log in and edit my account.

The rambling of the day:
I am not in a good mood lately so I am not posting much. I would like to propose these questions:

1. What are the topics you search more on search engines?
2. What are the more common keys you use for these searches?
3. What are you more interested in while browsing the Web?

Now the reason behind this. A guy I know is working on some sort of "blog" where he has put AdSense advertisement and thanks to some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) now he gets about 300 dollars per month in revenues from people clicking on AdSense links. I have been always against this idea of filling the Web of advertisement crap, as you can see in the sticky post of this blog. In the same time I do need some money, expecially these days. My personal worry is I would like to write either a simple and silly blog about my ramblings or at least something useful and interesting. In the first case I don't feel like adding advertisement to the blog and bother people with it, in the second it would be possibile but I can't find a topic that I know well enough. Now, that guy above told me it doens't matter what you write, you simply copy things from other places on the Web, until people are directed to your pages by Google and then they are presented the AdSense links, they click and go away and you get payed. Yes, money. But It looks so depressing... Maybe it is me being wrong as usual.
