Such articles are quite popular today, but they are lacking the most important part - they do not describe UI workflow, only screenshots. And UI designer/UI geek can't get any useful information from these screenshots...

You are right, this article is interesting mostly for people like me who are old enough to have experienced most of those operating systems in first person and then they can recall the parts you are saying. Besides a real analysis would require a whole book for each example.

My personal opinion the problem is when people have to decide what the computer is for and then they have to design the proper tools for the computer use. See for example the obvious contradiction between the bloated Vista and the netbooks. I am still getting phone calls by the providers that try to sell the Internet as cable TV and the computer as "media center" and in the same time they give you netbooks in bundle. I don't get the idea of a media center with 10" screen, like I don't understand watching movies and TV shows on my mobile phone. Some things about IT are nonsense, like the ever growing hardware power that almost everybody uses for doing the same things as 10 years ago, with the addon of some eyecandy.
