Yet another thing I don't understand

Many places in USA are affected by tornados. My question is: in places where there are possible earthquakes you build resistant buildings. In places where there are possible tornados you build resistant buildings? Nope, they are doll houses made with few fragile wood and panels. What am I missing?

I don't think so. Buildings are made following the local regulations. In Italy we have got the problem of all the old or even ancient buildings that can't be rebuilt with modern standards but in many areas the new buildings must be resistant to earthquakes. Stupid people are those who build houses right under the volcanos or in the rivers bed and belive me they do exist and they are many. My question is why USA authorities do not enforce tornadoes resistant buildings in those areas. The ages of the pioneers in the wild wild west, bulding temporary structures, is gone since some time. You build with steel and concrete, the tornado can break windows and take away the roof cover, that's all, people are relatively safe inside.

I don't know if it is viable to build a house resistant to tornadoes... they make shelters, though... but not really at the prices for everyone. I guess it is cheaper to rebuild a weak house, than to build a strong enough one.

I don't know but here simply you aren't allowed to build a new house that doesn't respect some mandatory safety standards that are different depending on the local risk level. It doesn't matter if they are more expensive. The same goes for the electrical power, the gas or fuel heater, etc. For example I have to call a service every year to get my gas heater inspected and certified. Maybe it would be cheaper if an house go ka-boom from time to time instead inspecting all the heaters. But people get hurt in the process.

I understand that but from TV it seems there are whole towns build with Lego, some wood and spit... Besides I bet people are killed by flying debris, not collapsing buildings.

From what I understand it is very difficult to build a house that will survive a tornado. Just the flying debris will destroy most walls etc...

I don't think so. Reinforced concrete structure and cemented bricks are extremely resistant. The tornado for sure would damage the roof and break windows but it could not level the building, even throwing cars and trucks at it.

This is more like a propaganda, but might worth take a look...

See here:
"Pass Christian, Ms., September 27, 2005 -- Mississippi resident Scott Sunberg is building a steel reinforced concrete house using many FEMA building standards that would minimize potential destruction from a hurricane. Hurricane Katrina came through this area and his was the only house still standing in the neighorhood."

Again, I can't belive such a basic and obvious thing is not acquired. That house looks ugly but with some little effort you can make something better.

There is also the famous tale about the three pigs (I guess it was written by brothers Grimm), where the wolf comes and...

So there is a regulation about this matter!, only people is too lazy to take it in count....

By FoxM, # 26. May 2008, 12:34:02

I don't think there is an enforced regulation, maybe there are some raccomandations. That is my point. I can't understand the public officers not enforcing safety standards. If you are hit by tornados or hurricanes on regular basis it is just incredibly irresponsible.

That's my point... they care more about trying to control petroleum than to take care of their own people.
