Windows 2000 and TCP settings for high speed ADSL

, ,

My provider recently upgraded my ADSL line from 2Mbps to 7Mbps. Then I discovered a strange problem, connecting my Windows XP laptop I got about 6.5Mbps, when I tried my old desktop with Windows 2000 I got about 3Mbps. So I tried changing router, changing network card and finally reinstalling Windows 2000 but no effect. Until I tried TCP Optimizer and that apparently solved the issue. It seems the default TCP setting in Windows 2000 are wrong but I have still to look at the details of it.

World's Fattest CountriesOpera and Flash, what is the problem?

I've heard that some modem/routers are not suitable for speeds more than 2 Mbps and than you have to buy other ones, called adsl2+ if I recall correctly. As far as Windows is concerned, I don't think Microsoft ever designed 2000 for being able to operate with speed more than 2Mbps because it seemed something extraordinary at the time being. Just like WindowsXP and hard drives more than 80 Gbytes

Nope, if I recall it correctly ADSL modem/routers can deal up to 8Mbps. You need ADSL2 over that limit. About Win2K it is just a matter of TCP settings. The provider could give a REG file. If they cared.
