The World I Love

Gerard Lucanus

In the absence of creativity...

, , , ...

...there exists this post.

With nothing to write about at the moment, I am forced to post this bulletin I answered on Friendster. It's basically a random set of questions, the answers of which are of no use to anyone, that convey a slight hint of boredom left behind by the author.

So, here goes. Enjoy.

By the way, the questions are not edited. So either you learn tagalog, or you deny this post the purpose of its existence i.e. don't read it.

...but please do.

1. Ilan ang bestfriends mo?
- Dalawa. 'Best' doesn't apply here.

2. Cno ang huling ngcomment syo sa fs?
- A super hot chick. Yeah, like you'd find out.

3. Anong gusto mong tawag sayo?
- Ano mang gusto mo.

4. Anong oras ka natutulog pag-gabi?
- Paiba-iba eh.

5. Pumili Ka: SPORTS, MUSIC O ACTING?
- Yung puwedeng gawin pag standby, umawit.

6. Ilang beses ka kumakain sa isang araw?
- Dalawa, kaya tumataba eh.

7. Ano nagpapasaya sa araw mo?
- Paggising.

8. Umiinom ka ba ng Beer?
- Best. Drink. Ever.
Bakit?

Meron na nito noong 6000 BC pa lamang. Iniinom na 'to ng ating kanununununununununuan noon pa man.

Sabi nga ni Homer Simpson, "[Beer]: The cause of, and answer to, all of life's problems."

Salamat po.

9. Madali ka bang masaktan?
- Wala akong balak alamin.

10. Kaibigan mo o mahal mo?
- Hindi kelangang pumili. Parang paghinga at pag-inom, anumang gawin mo, pag hindi mo ginawa ang isa, eh say hello to the grim reaper for me.

11. Sa tingin mo ba meron kang "SECRET ADMIRER"?
- Sayang lang ang panahon kung meron man.

12. Ano ang gagawin mo pag nakasalubong mo enemy mo?
- Deny him confirmation of his existence i.e. Dedma.

13. Masasabi mo bang kompleto na ang buhay mo ngayon?
- If that were true, then I'd be dead. There is always more to life than what it is now.

14. Kumaen kanaba ?
- Oo.

15. Masaya ka ba?
- Oo.

16. Kumusta na ang puso mo?
- Tumitibok para sa buhay, pagmamahal, at pagsusulat.

17. Madali ka bang magalit?
- Refer to #9

18. Kelan ka huling nakakita ng unggoy?
- Sa tv malimit.

19. Anong huli mong ininom?
- Good ol' H2O-9, hehe.

20. May crush k b ngayon?
- Hindi na siguro ako kasama sa mga dapat tanungin niyan.

21. kelan ka huling tumawa?
- #19 kamown.

22. Madali ka bang maimpluwensyahan?
- Meron akong sariling intindi at paniniwala.

23. May pinoproblema ka ba ngayon?
- Ako'y namamahinga sa kasalukuyan, kaya anumang problema meron ay kailangan munang maghintay.

24. Do you ignore people when you're mad/upset with them?
- Yep.

25. What do you bite more, your tongue, lips, or cheeks?
- Food.

26. Is it easy to make you smile?
- I don't have a smiling stage, I proceed immediately to the laugh when told something funny to.

27. Why did you cry the last time you did?
- Graduate na eh :'-(

28. If you could have something right now, what would it be?
- Whatever anyone gives me.

29. If you're being quiet what does it mean?
- I have nothing to say?

30. anong genre mu ?
- Laid back.

Whew, that was excruciating. Writing a Tagalog post for an audience of English speakers? I've officially banished this post to the void of obscurity. Unless it can be googled. Which I just did. So welcome back to the realm of existence Post! And thank you for reading, you wonderful reader you. flirt

The Toilet and Opera

,

It may not seem like it, but there are quite a few similarities between the two.

What are they?

Well, aside from the fact that they both give us the privilege to do certain tasks anytime, anywhere and for free, they also share a long history of innovations, and all are focused not only on the betterment of the product itself, but for the benefit of course, of all who use it. You have your sewage systems, water tanks, self cleaning vortex flushes, dual flushes etc. for the toilet, and for Opera? Well, there's your tabbed browsing, speed dialing, page zooming, mouse gestures, Unite, download manager, and so forth.

Of all these things, however, there are two innovations that, in my opinion, contributed to the success and eventual ubiquity of the two (the day will come, Opera). First, let's start with that of the toilet, the S-trap. Before it, all the wonderful aromas and smells of what has gone before are free to rise and wander about the room, with hardly a care in the world of who they bother, whether they be French noblemen or simple peasants. With the invention of the S-trap however, these smells were then forever sealed in the blackness of the sewers, never to be inhaled from again. Suddenly, we found ourselves in olfactory peace, something which has become quite an essential part of our modern, civilized living. And all thanks to a simple s-shaped tube filled with water.

Now, Opera might not have had the same problems as the toilet, but it did come up with an innovation that deals with something certainly as annoying. I'm talking about none other than the Opera Turbo and its ability to increase your browsing speed. It might not seem like much but here in the poverty stricken Philippines, where unlimited connections are expensive and most of the cheaper, prepaid deals are limited by duration, well, is there any other setting where the Turbo seems perfectly designed for? Yep, didn't think so. Here, most of the web users are students researching for their homework and projects (at least, that's what they say) and a great deal of them are surfing the web either via prepaid connection, or computer rental shops. And both cost money, something which the students don't have enough of. With Turbo, however, they wouldn't have to worry as much about cost, and they would be able to do more work in less time, which may even translate to better grades and later maybe even better careers. Turbo doesn't only apply to students, mind you, but I think it's the best example of its use. And I don't know of any instance in my whole college life where I wouldn't have been able to use Turbo for my research and papers. Also with the web's evolution as a collective of all human knowledge, don't you think every student, no everybody, should be able to connect to it without having to pay a cent? Well, we're not quite there yet, but with Turbo's cost reducing abilities I say, surf on students, surf on.

Honestly, for its efficiency increasing ability, I think Turbo is one of the best innovations for a browser to date, so much so that it should be a necessity.

And with that, we arrive at the end of my post, I hope I've enlightened you in some way about these two, somewhat similar products, and the respective innovations that we should never do without.

Hello Opera!

, , , ...

WOW, an online writing competition for a job? Right here at MyOpera? Again, WOW. I mean WOW. It's like my first blog has some sort of power to grant my wishes. If that's true, then I have made the biggest mistake of my life. I knew I should have written about world peace, nay, world LOVE, but nooo, I had to dedicate the whole post to my selfish old self. Well, I managed to write about world peace though... in a wee little sentence on twitter! Man, imagine if that was my first post, that could've been something huh? ...oh well.

Anyway, I've always wanted to write, and now I have an opportunity to get paid for doing what I love. Again, thank you, first post. Now, do I dare the heavens and shoot for the chance of a lifetime? Do I dare become one of those fortunate people who earn a living for their passion? From the eyes of a fresh graduate, I say to those with THE GUTS be the - err, good luck! :D

I'm gonna be up against some tough competition, good thing the Philippines is regarded as the U.S. of the east simply because a great deal of us speak, and most even prefer to speak, English. I think this stemmed from when the Americans occupied our country and set up schools that taught the English language. And so a heavy portion of our education today involves us learning to perfect our skills in the language. That takes care of the English skill bit, now to the other requirement of the competition, technological fluency.

This is where I have some doubts of whether or not I have a chance to win this, since I don't really have any expertise regarding our current technology. And given Opera's description, I am left with a somewhat vague idea of what to write about. Then again, it could mean that I also have a bit of flexibility regarding my topic. Let's see, my most recent tech-oriented experience is when I assembled my new cpu, bought the parts, read the manual, and put it all together. However, I did have a consultant, a.k.a. good friend of mine with a brother working at hp, on what parts I should buy, and in case any of you are wondering, here is what we came up with:

1.5 TB Seagate Barracuda
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
500Watt Gigabyte Power Supply
ASUS P5Q SE2
Intel Core™2 Quad Q9550
2x 2GB Kingston RAM

That's it. Some of you may be saying "Hey, you don't have an optical drive." and you'd be correct. Despite all our planning, we forgot to buy something to put our cds and dvds in. And you could only imagine the frustration I went through when I realized this after booting up my system and got ready to install the drivers. Good thing I still had my old cpu, which has been with me since 2003, and used it to download the drivers instead, although I still can't install the goodies contained in the hardware cds. :frown: Now despite my apparent absent-mindedness, I wouldn't say that I am completely ignorant when it comes to our technology, although I wouldn't say that I am an expert on it either. I'd say I have a general, though sound, understanding of how the things around me work.

Now, I really hope Opera wants more of a writer than an online tech consultant, if that was the case then at least I'll have a chance, albeit a slim one, given my measly writing skills. Hey, at least I make up for it with heart. One thing's for sure though, I won't let this opportunity slip by without trying. Here's hoping that I'll be writing for Opera sometime in the future. I hope you guys are hoping that what I'm hoping for is actually hope-worthy. And for those of you that do, and even for those of you that don't, thanks a googol!

Hello Web!

, ,

And hello to you, my dear reader.

Allow me to introduce myself, I am Gerard Lucanus Panganiban, a fresh college graduate from my beloved De La Salle Canlubang, before which, I came from St. Augustine school. I live somewhere I don't want you to find me, and my age does not concern our eternal interwebs. I am passionate(so very passionate) about theology, philosophy and physics, none of the number stuff though. I would love to be able to answer, for myself, Why am I? A question that has been looming in my thoughts ever since I had the power to invoke them. And these three ideas, I believe, could help me in achieving that.

I am currently looking for a job, which means I have a heck of a lot more free time than I know what to do with, so I usually spend it by writing, trying to sketch, and studying. I would like to have a job involving me writing about the three things I mentioned above. Ah well, a man could dream. Still, if you could help me find a job like that, well, you will be greatly, greatly appreciated. Not reciprocated though, apprecia-oh what the heck, I'll be your very good friend.

On a more personal note, I currently have a girlfriend and we've been together since our high school days, as are my best friend and most of my close friends. I am a proud member of the FreeRiders club at DLS-Canlubang, and although we aren't officially listed, we do exist. My friends and I usually hang out as much as we could, everybody's been very busy lately compared to when we were younger, I guess that's just how it goes. Maybe it's a good thing though, as we end up drinking our guts out most of the time, and that can't be good, can it? Anyway, I deeply acknowledge the fact that a great part of what I am is a product of my experiences with the people involved in my life, and no matter how brief the time they have spent, or how light a footprint they may have left, I want them to know that they are appreciated. I believe I am blessed with having met the greatest people a man could ever hope for, they may not all be famous and powerful, but they are good, and that for me, is what matters.

I listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, my favorite local band Parokya ni Edgar, FrouFrou, Imogen Heap, and many others, basically if it sounds good while driving my imaginary car, to my playlist it goes. I have a small collection of Zippo lighters, and a bunch of broken Rotring tech pens, thank you people who borrowed them for returning the non-writing-part in perfect condition.

I'm also interested about history, both here in the Philippines and the rest of the world, so long as it involves pictures,.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about myself for now. Thank you for reading my all-text first post on the www!

I'll be improving the look of my post as I get the hang of using the pretty buttons above.
