A few years ago, I think it was 1964, I slipped into Sniffen Court Inn, a small club in New York City.
It was a pleasant room and the singer was quite good. Her name, of course, was Marlena Shaw and that was the last I heard of her for two years until she went on the playboy club circuit and suddenly appeared on stage at Hugh Hefner's bunny hutch in boston.
Instead of just a good singer she had become a superb one. And quite aside from her vocal greatness she had also emerge into a superior personality with a polished act.
The past year has been an exciting and encouraging one for this 26-year-old native of New Rochelle, N.Y. her club performances from Boston to Los Angeles have won rave reviews; she's made the charts with a couple of the Cadet singles; appeared on some influential Tv shows and further turned up the heat in Las Vegas when she sang with the Count Basie band at The Sands.
And Now another terribly important step forward for Marlena Shaw... her first LP.
But there are problems when you record a girl like Miss Shaw, because there is so much she can do with a song...any song. And so many readings she can give to a lyric.
