Born in Stockholm he moved with his family to the United States when he was 5 years old. "We moved around a lot. I remember living in S:T Louis, Omaha, Trenton New Jersey, Pennsylvania among other places. Whenever there was a piano at the house my father being a part-time musician used to give me piano lessons. He used to work at piano bars, lounges etc to get extra income to support the family. We never had a recordplayer, so apart from the radio the music I heard was my father playing." When Ulf was 10 years old his family moved back to Sweden. "We moved around a lot there as well, I remember remember living with my grandparents and other reatives. When I came back I had forgotten almost all my swedish so I had to learn that language all over again." "I remember hearing the Beatles for the first time I think in -64, and it knocked me out completely." From then on and serveral years ahead the brittish pop and rock scene took first place in Ulf´s life. About the time the Beatles broke up Ulf starded listening seriosly to jazz. "When I first heard Miles Davis and Bill Evans I suddenly knew what I wanted to do in my life, so I got back to seriosly studying piano again." At that time living in Stockholm Ulf began listening to all jazz records he could find, and checking out the club scene. He was sitting in at all the jam-sessions he could find and before long he was permanent member of several groups touring through scandinavia , doing tv and radio broadcasts and playing jazz-festivals etc. One band took him all the way over to New Orleans to play the jazz-festival there and to New York. "Around -87 or so I formed my own group "Ulf Sandberg Quartet" and started to write my own material. At that time James Taylor (James Taylor Quartet) was living in Stockholm temporaly. As I was giving lessons in jazz-harmony and pianoplaying, James had heard of me and looked me up for some tuition." When James moved back to London he brought with him some recordings Ulf had made with his group in Stockholm. He played them to Eddie Piller who was starting the new label "Acid Jazz". He used track for the first compilation "Totaly Wired", and Ulf was suddenly part of a new music movement in London. His first album was released in -93 on the "Acid Jazz" label. Jazid CD 74 "Ulf Sandberg Quartet".

a bientôt l'ami
