Metallica!

, ,

I'm going to a concert tonight for the first time in many years! Plus, it's not just any concert but a Metallica concert! Woo! I'm extremely excited but I hope that it's not too crazy, just somewhat crazy. Anyway, my last semester is shaping up so far. I'm in classes that I'm really enjoying (except for one in which the professor doesn't actually teach but asks us questions as if we were kindergarteners). Also, my mom bought me a totally awesome gift that I will reveal in pictures later this week. To call it kickass would be an understatement. Anyway, let's hope I survive tonight!

A Year in Review

, , , ...

Well another month has passed with me breaking my promise to blog more often. Thankfully, it's new year's resolution time so I can officially pledge to blog more next year. It seems that when I'm in school and life is hectic, I never have time for it, but as soon as I'm done, I'm too lazy to do anything. What an awful curse I have to live with! Yea, right... Anyway, so 2008 is coming rapidly to a close and I wonder what I've accomplished or what's different for me as the year as passed. Here is a short list:

I went from having little research laboratory experience to working on my own thesis project

I fell in love with art history

I kicked the MCAT's ass

After 6 years, I return to Italy and I visit England and France for the first time

After turning 21, I go out to a club for the first time with my sister in London (where I could've drank at 20 anyway)

Crisanta and I pull off a successful Astro Club coup

I began to consistently exercise

I began blogging and keeping track of my life

I can't really think of anymore but at least there's a short testament to a year in one person's life. Who knows what 2009 will bring. Hopefully, graduation and medical school but only time will tell!

Why must life be so busy!

, , , ...

Wow, so I had one post in the month of October and the way things are shaping up, it'll probably be the same in November. I really suck but so does life, so don't blame me! Anyway, I saw Quantum of Solace yesterday and I thought it was really good, although several of my friends disagree. While James Bond did not act particularly like James Bond in this movie, I do think that it shows a side of the character that the audience hasn't really seen in depth, that of the man consumed by revenge. That being said, I do think that the producers are trying to give us a clearer sense of how James Bond became the man he is and so I can't fault them for a movie that shows the character as a work in progress. In addition, it was a kick ass action movie and who doesn't like that!

On the med school side of things, I've finally received two interview offers that I'm very excited about. One is fairly soon, so we'll see how that goes. Luckily, it's for a school that I would like to go to but isn't in my top tier of choices, so I won't be too upset if it doesn't go perfectly. It's just very reassuring to finally get responses after the tedious application process. The whole procedure is just awful with waiting and tension. I hope it pays off!

Barack Obama is president-elect! Holla!

As for school, the end of the semester is approaching very quickly meaning that I have a ton of work due in a very short period of time and it sucks. It will be good to finally be on break but after that, I'll only have one more semester of college left and that is really sad! Based on the testimonies of my friends who are in med school now, I don't think I'll be having that much fun for the next four years of my life. Once again, I hope it pays off! As for next semester, I'm finally taking it somewhat easy, but not too easy. I'm taking an easy biology and psychology course in addition to my thesis, as well as another art history (which has become my favorite subject) and an english course on The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot, in which we read the poem and all the works to which it alludes. I'm very excited and I hope I actually have fun in these classes instead of dying with a huge amount of work. I really want to try to go out of college with a bang!

Wow, I'm really lazy with blogging

, , , ...

School has made my life a living hell! That's basically the take home message of this long delayed post. Let me describe my typical week. On Mondays, I have to research for my thesis from 10-12 and then 2-4 with an hour class in between. Then, usually in the evening I either go to spin class and have a few meetings. And this is the easy day. Tuesday, I have class from 10-11:30, I TA from 1-4, class from 4-5:30, and TA again from 6:45-7:45. Yea it sucks. Follow that up with an early morning on Wednesday at 8:15, followed by class at 10 until 1, followed by my 2.5 hour weekly seminar at 2:15. Thursday brings another 8:15 morning followed by class from 10-1 and then 3 hour lab at 2. Finally, on another somewhat easy day, on Friday I have class from 10-1 followed by lab research from 2-5. On top of that, add all the work I have to do and more spinning/exercise and I have basically no time on my hands to do anything! So that's my excuse for not blogging. I think now that the semester's past the halfway point, things should get a little lighter. We'll see what happens!

So let's see what's new in my life! Well, the Astronomy Club Annual Haunted House has come to a close and all I can say is that it was a massive success. We made a ton of money and scared a lot of innocent people! I personally got to dress up as a creepy clown tonight so it was totally worth it! The weather was a bit dodgy but for once, everything worked out for us and it rained during the day, not during the event. We had a lot of volunteers or "creepers" as one of our members called them and I think we really freaked the crap out of a ton of people. I can now say from experience that scaring girls is one of the funniest things I've ever witness just because of how freaked out they get and how high and long they can scream for! Good stuff.

In other news, Rock Band 2 came out about 2 weeks ago and it is ridiculous in both the good and bad ways. It's totally awesome and is amazingly fun but it is a major distraction and is totally eating up time that I should be spending doing work. Oh well, it's a welcomed distraction for me. Plus, it totally opens me up to so many new songs or songs I should have downloaded but haven't! Anyway, I look forward to playing it for hours and hours for many months to come, especially when my cousin comes down to visit before Thanksgiving!

I can't think of anything else that needs to be reported right now. I'm somewhat distracted by the mosquito-like bugs that I keep killing in my room. I wonder where they're coming from. Maybe it's from my roommates who leave food out all over the place. Maybe the mosquitos aren't the only things that need to be slapped!

Georgetown Loews is Ridiculous!

, , , ...

Hola! Sorry that I haven't posted for a while but since school has really picked up and I've been scrambling to keep my head above water! Thankfully, I have a relatively light weekend and all I can say is it's about time. On the medical school front, I finished a total of seven applications last weekend, leaving only two left for me to complete, although I don't think I'll do them for a while after that productivity last weekend. As for classes, I have a steady workload and schedule set up but it involves a few too many late nights followed by early mornings, so I'm going to have to start taking advantage of the weekends a little bit more. What I'm really frightened of is when the tests and papers start to pick up becuase then I won't even have time for the normal homework. And on top of that, I'm going to have to get started on my thesis research which is going to begin to eat up more and more time during my days of the week. I predict a couple of really busy semesters this year but, as in spinning, you just have to power through and finish strong. After all, I'm going to really miss these ridiculously tough months after I graduate. Speaking of spinning, I've been going about three times a week, of which I'm really proud, and I even got Kelly S to play "Hysteria" by Muse after I requested it. Now she wants me to burn her a CD of music and it feels pretty awesome. Unfortunately, I don't have any blank CD's, so that will have to wait until next week.

In other news, I went to the movies today to see Burn After Reading. It was a really funny film but my experience at the movies was just ridiculous. We went to the Georgetown Loews Theater at 4:20pm expecting to get the not-so-cheap matinee price of $8.50. Once we got there and bought our tickets, though, we were informed that the matinee ends after 4pm. To say the least, I was completely shocked and pissed off that I would have to pay full price ($10.50) to see what would have been a matinee at any other theater. On top of that, while they used to have a student discount every day, the policy changed to only have one "student day" a week. I mean how ridiculous can a movie theater get? I defintely think that this one takes the cake. Anyway, if you want to see a good movie, Burn After Reading is very enjoyable and entertaining in that dark comedy kind of way but just make sure you go to a normal theater where a matinee ends at 6pm.

Tap it up!

Horray for exercise! One of my friends got me to try spinning class at the gym this week. I was extremely ecstatic at first because I knew that spinning involved bikes and cycling is one form of exercise that I've always enjoyed and been able to do. My father and I used to go on bike tours of about 30 miles for charity and whatnot. Basically, I didn't think that this would be that difficult. As you can guess, I was wrong. The first major problem was that I hadn't exercised in a long time so it was quite a shock to my system to be back on a bike. The other problem was that it was way more rigorous than riding a bike normally. Basically, instead of just pedaling normally down the street, you pedal as fast as you can with heavy resistance in a hot, crowded room in a gym. Then, if that sounds hard, they kick it up a notch by having you stand and pedal quickly, which feels like running with your legs strapped to a turning wheel. The good thing about the class, however, is that you can adjust your own resistance to tailor your own fitness, so if it is ridiculously hard for you and you can't do anything like, like me on Thursday, you can turn the resistance all the way down so it's really easy. That didn't even save me my first day and I could barely pedal for the full hour. The best part of the workout definitely comes at the end when you try to walk normally and wind up falling because of your linguine-like legs! It gets even better when you try to walk up or down steps shortly after. As bad as that sounds, I was totally hooked after one workout. I mean it's really painful when you push yourself, but it was also a lot of fun (especially with the awesome dance music they play) and you really do feel great afterwards, except for all your muscles and your ass from sitting on those hard seats. So, we decided to go back to class this morning so that we could have the same instructor and start a routine. I'm happy to say that I did much better this time and I was able to keep up with the class for the entire hour. Also, I was able to turn up the resistance a lot more than last time, so I feel like I got a really good workout! I'm sure part of that is because the class definitely seemed a bit easier than last time and I bought a nice cushion for my bike seat. Anyway, I'm pretty excited to go back this week and hopefully, start to get in better shape. Plus, self-flagellation through exercise is always fun to do! I can't wait for the next time Kelly S. tells us to reach down and tap up the resistance so that I can feel the burn some more!

Pun of the Day

, ,

I unintentionally came up with a clever t-shirt slogan/pun the other day. Geography: It's where it's at. I'm quite satisfied with it and if anyone wants to take the initiative to come up with kitschy shirt designs, I'd be really pleased!

Geography quizzes and poker!

, , , ...

Today was the first day of classes here at Georgetown and I had quite the slow start. Even though it was Wednesday, Georgetown decides to hold Monday classes since we miss so many Mondays throughout the semester apparently. I don't quite understand how that makes up for missing a Wednesday but whatever. My only class on Wednesday is at noon, so I woke up late, puttered around, watched the Price is Right, etc. I had never really watched the show before but it kind of sucks you in. I see that as being a regular Monday morning event for me. Anyway, aside from my one class, I spent the rest of the day playing games in my room. I'm hooked on these geography games lately and I've been playing that over and over again. I don't know but I just feel this desire to know where all the countries are and what their capitals are. It doesn't sound that bad when you think of all the obvious countries like Spain and Italy, but it gets harder when you move to Africa and even parts of the Middle East with all the -stan countries. Then if you think that's difficult, try moving onto to capitals. Like I said, it's a lot of fun and personally, I feel like people should know where most countries are anyway, so I'm really doing myself a credit so that I won't look like an ass next time someone asks me about geography. If anyone else is interested, here's a site where you can find some really good in detailed quizzes. I think these games have inspired me to buy a big map to put on my wall.
In addition, I once again tried my hand at poker and I did surprisingly well. We were playing for money, which kind of bothers me because I don't really know how to play and I don't understand why we can't just play for fun anyway. Apparently, people act stupid when you're not playing for money, but I feel like people can choose not to act stupid and play for nothing. Anyway, I started off pretty badly and I got a lot of money (read: a couple of bucks) taken pretty early on, but then I started to come back and eventually, I ended up winning the most when I decided I was bored and stopped for the night. I even took out my roommate. Sucker. Apparently, because I don't know what I'm doing, I don't really have a tell, a fact which I'm starting to take advantage of by feigning mistakes and ignorance. Although I don't really have a desire to keep playing and winning more money, it is kind of fun to win and beat people who apparently know what they're doing. Let's just hope it doesn't backfire the next time we play, if I ever man up to the challenge again!

Return to Georgetown

, , , ...

Suffice it to say, I'm not doing that well with this blog posting thing. Happily, I'm back at school and that will definitely put me in the mood to start writing again. As for my trip to Europe, I posted pictures with all the major sites I saw but I feel it may take to long to summarize everything I did. That being said, I'll try to describe the overall trip as best I can. We started off in Italy, where we stayed in Rome and took day trips to Naples/Pompeii and Florence. Rome is the best example of an old city that is extremely alive and youthful. All of the buildings are very old and authentic looking, giving the entire city a very classical look. In addition, ancient ruins, such as the Colosseum and the Pantheon, as well as Egyptian obelisks are scattered throughout the city, allowing a palpable feeling of the history of the city. Florence and Naples have a similar feel, especially Florence which has works of art adorning the streets, as it was the key city in the Italian Renaissance. Visiting Pompeii is literally like stepping into the ancient world as the experience really allows you to see what life was like in an ancient Italian city. Overall, Italy is gorgeous and was very friendly and inviting all around. As I said, the city of Rome is quite vibrant and alive. I was quite surprised to see massive crowds of people at the city's most popular spots such as the Spanish steps and the Trevi fountain late into the night. Vespas whiz in and out of traffic seamlessly with larger cars and buses. The entire city just seems so active and alive. Next, we moved to Paris. Unfortunately, my impression of the city was marred by quite a few factors. First and foremost, we had a terrible experience on Air France, as the airline made it difficult for my grandmother, who was in a wheelchair, to board the plane, in addition to losing some of our luggage and being completely unhelpful about it. Secondly, it was somewhat cloudy and rainy when we arrived, which tends to dampen your view when you've come from beautiful, hot, Italian weather. Thirdly, and I don't want to sound like an anti-Francophile here, but the some of the people came off as very rude towards us as English speakers. Now, I'm not saying that everyone was snobby, but it was definitely a higher ratio of rude people than in Italy, a fact which was probably aided by the fact that none of us knew any French, whereas I know basic Italian. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt but, trust me, half the time we just got the feeling that we were not wanted. As for the city, the buildings and feel are more modern than Italy, but they still have that old world charm about them, especially the gothic cathedrals, such as Notre Dame, and the beautiful palaces, such as the former palace/modern museum, the Louvre. Paris definitely seemed a lot more laid back than Italy and not nearly as vital, but more bohemian in a way. Unfortunately, we were only in Paris for about a day and a half, which is not enough time to see the sights and to learn the city. I would definitely go back there, but not without having a little bit of French under my belt! Finally, London is the most modern of the three cities. While there are still buildings that date way back when, such as the palaces and the Tower of London, many of the buildings are modern with contemporary architecture. London also struck me as very classy with a lot of people wearing suits on the streets and acting very business like and professional. The people in London were quite friendly and it was quite the relief to hear English once again. As for the city, I felt very at home, having lived in Sydney for 4 months. It was a grateful return to that English charm that I had gotten used to in Australia and of the three cities I visited, it was the only one I'd ever consider living in for an extended period of time in the future. So that's my brief summary of my trip. Of course, there are a lot of interesting little anecdotes in there, such as my dad losing his wallet and me finding my sister in Rome and Paris about 3 separate times without the use of a phone and without knowing where they would be. I'll save those for another time. For now, enjoy the pictures!

As for school, I got back to campus late last week and it's been great settling back into collegiate life after the summer at home. It's unfortunate that classes are starting soon and all the fun will soon be replaced by work. Tonight, Crisanta, one of her friends and myself picked up Cardboard Barack Obama from his summer retreat at the Observatory and walked him around campus. One of the first people we met was the vice president of student affairs in an elevator. I think he was quite impressed by the candidate and we decided that it would be best to take him around campus to meet the student body. From the library to the convenience store to the front gates, people flocked to see CBO. It was pretty amazing! People were very big on hugging him and taking pictures. One guy, who was possibly drunk, even offered us a lot of money to buy him. We stayed strong though. I mean, he's just too much fun to sell. We even got a Halloween idea out of it, but I'm not spoiling that one until it actually comes to fruition. Next, I think we should stage a debate/battle with Cardboard John McCain who resides in a window a few blocks off campus. Personally, I like a candidate who will go out among the masses instead of one who just watches from the window! Anyway, I'll leave you with a picture of our escapade from the library. I like to call it "Reflections of Senator Obama and friends".

Back from Europe

, , , ...

I'm back from Europe, but I've been back for about a week now. Unfortunately, I've been too much of a bum to post anything here because I find the task of a massive trip blog post very daunting. So I've decided to post a little bit every day that way I'll get it done and I'll keep you readers in suspense. Rest assured that I did keep track of the things I did so there won't be any fuzzy details! For now, I'll just give a small update on my life. Since returning from vacation, I went back to work last week for a final three days. The office has been really tense lately because the doctor has been yelling at everyone for random stuff. I really don't know how much more those people can take. I'm just glad I'm finally done there because working was just not fitting into my summer groove. On my last day, my boss decided to take me out, so we went out for a couple of drinks (which was the first time I've been out in the city since I turned 21 in Europe) with the staff. Luckily, the night was paid for by another medical office to whom we refer patients, so everything was free! Unfortunately, though, I had to rush home because my mom decided to throw me a birthday party on the same night. It was fun to see all my family but after my long day, I pretty much collapsed. I like being with my family but I don't like being the center of attention and having to entertain people. It's not really my style. Anyway, this weekend, I slept over my cousin's house so we could have one last video game extravaganza. I bought a used copy of Wario Ware for Wii which is basically this game that features a wide array of 5 second minigames that are played in a row so that entertained us for a good portion of the night. Then, after 2 hours of rocking out on Rock Band, we played some Wii Big Brain Academy before finally going to sleep at 4. It was a good night. Now, I'm in the final stages of getting ready to go back to school. Since work is done and only packing awaits, I'll definitely have some time to post Europe updates as well as more random stuff as usual. Stay tuned!
