From the "I Didn't Know That" Department

, , ,

I send everything I download to my ~/Downloads folder: wallpapers, videos, DMGs,...everything. If I decide to keep it, I'll move it to another more permanent folder. I used to do this by opening each folder and dragging the file from one to the other.

A few minutes ago I discovered I could drag directly from a fan-style stack directly to the destination folder. I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work with list- or grid-style stacks, I just haven't tried it yet. I like it better than opening the Downloads folder, the command-clicking around until I get to the final destination folder.

I don't know if this is one of those things that everyone but me knew, but I searched around a little and didn't see it mentioned.

Peace.

Closing multiple windows/notifications at one time

, , , ...

Back on June 6th, Matt Klowskowski demonstrated in his Photoshop Killer Tips vlog/podcast an easy way to close multiple image files in CS3, though it also works in CS2. All you do is hold down the "option" key while you click on the Close (x) button. This closes the image files, but leaves Photoshop running.

On June 9th, lifehacker.com published a way to close all Growl notifications at once. Can you guess? All you do is hold down the "option" key while you click on the Close button.

I suspect this is a Mac OS X system function and not some fluke of Photoshop or Growl. Since Finder is always running, I opened three folders in separate windows, then option-clicked the Close button. All three windows closed and Finder continued to run. I next opened three image files in Preview and, as before, option-clicked the Close button. Again, all three images closed and Preview remained running.

I don't know how helpful you'll find this, but I wish I'd known about it when I was reorganizing my digital photo library.
