Steam, Impulse & Others

Greetings,
I have been using Steam since it was forced on us back in the day. I have many issues with such a service, and the control it has over your game library. But I use it because it seems I have no choice, and it is not all bad. The lack of customer service is one thing that irritates me to no end with Steam. But this is not a bitch piece, I wanted to find out what other options maybe out there and opinions on them.
I recently discovered IMPULSE, looks like Gamestops entry into the world of Steam like properties. I have not used it yet, so I am not sure of all its functions, features, and so forth. On the serfuce it looks like a gateway or store to buy the games your after, since I have not seen many PC games sold in a Gamestop as of late.
EA has ORIGINS, and again I have not used it, so I don't know much about it either. I have seen some postings online that say to avoid it, that EA charges you for all sorts of hidden things, how true this is I am not sure. But I would check it out before buying or downloading from them.
There was another Steam like service for the old school games.. I think it was called GoG. I know nothing about this one.. just sorta stumbled upon it while looking for other STEAM like programs. So check it out if you like classic games.
If you know of other programs or services like these, please let me know.. thanks!
Here is a LINK LIST of the services mentioned above. If you are a user of any of these please post a reply with your thoughts on them, thanks.
