RIFT - MMO

Greetings,
I have recently been invited and played the beta of this MMO. RIFTS when I researched it, read about it, I thought the game would be stupid and lame. Boy was I surprised. This game has so many neat and cool features. The Rift raids are one cool feature. If your city of camp gets over run by the rift mobs the city falls to the other side and your quest and NPC all disappear until you recap the city or camp. Each town or camp has a shard, if your a Defiant it is red or if your a Guardian it is blue.
I should back up a bit.. there are two factions; the Guardians who are religion/faith based, and then there is the Defiant, who are technology/faith based. Your both after the same thing, saving your home world from being devoured by a great evil... just how you go about it, you differ. That puts you at odds with one another, both blaming the other for your current situation.
There are 3 races per side so a total of 6.. well both sides have a human element, an elf element, and there is a Hulk like race, the other have dwarfs. So really 4 races.
The classes are really well done. There are 4 classes, Mage, Rogue, Warrior, Cleric, each class has 3 parts or skill sets.. so your combo of skills will be different than most others. Think of it like a multi-class in Dungeons & Dragons, but instead of being from two of the classes above your restricted to the same class just a different form. An example would be a Rogue, you could be a ranger/assassin/saboteur, all rogue sub classes, but all offer different aspects and abilities, when combined can be quite powerful.
But lets get back to the game play and some of the features...
One of the things I like to do in every MMO I play is explore. I like to try to get places that your not supposed to get too.. and I have been rather good at it so far. I was surprised when I got to the tops of some mountain ranges in Rifts and found little hidden gems. An example would be a monument to Squirrels. You would stand next to this torch, it would ignite , and the little guys would start to chitter a song and dance around you and this torch. They also hide caches up there that give great rare items. Also hide Puzzles in such areas that can give great purple items if you solve them.. so they knew people like me would be trying for these hard to reach places and have rewarded us in many awesome ways.. I even got an Achievement called Mountain Climber.
Water, most MMO's forget the depths, and only allow you to skirt across the top.. well RIFT allows you to dive deep... they have even hidden some of the same rewards found in the mountains in the deep deep blue. Heck they even have quest that take you under water.
They have another cool feature one I enjoyed in EQ2 ( Everquest ) collections.. little sparkles of light off on some rock, in a tree, behind a bush.. etc.. you go and collect. Each one is part of a bigger collection, and these offer you lucky coins, not to mention the bragging rights of hey I completed this or that collection. Lucky coins can be used to buy kick butt items. Speaking of....
Money, you have your standard Platinum, Gold, Silver.. but you also have other types of currency. If you help in Rift battles, you get rewarded with ( I wanna say PLAINARDS ) a special kind of currency that allows you to buy gear and items that will make your character greater.. and again give you bragging rights.
Speaking of Characters, there are so many cool ways to tweak them. from your skill trees, to your soul shards, to gear and beyond. The Generator to make you, YOU... is alright, and is one thing i hope the final game offers more options... but it works well for what they give you now.
One thing about this game, as I ran around in it was the feeling I had done this before, I have played this game before.. I had many DEJAVU moments.. that is not really a bad thing, as it was familiar while still being new. But I could not shake the feeling of being in this game prior to this. Many people have compared it to Warhammer Online, and for good reason, I understand the art director is from Warhammer Online.. I am glad to have not heard one thing though.. all the WOW fanboys comparing it to their game... as this is NOT WOW... this is what WOW wishes it was. There I said it.. hate me now.
Had I not pressed past the research of this game, I would of missed out on what I consider a great MMO, with lots to offer every type of Gamer of MMO's. A Fully Dynamic world awaits you in RIFT.
