Marie's Musings

A crazy old woman ranting about nothing

Additions

It has been a long, drawn out winter and I decided I needed some greenery and color to brighten my days. This apartment has plenty of light so there's a possibility I might have some success with plants although I'm not noted for a green thumb even when I follow directions exactly. This poor little African Violet was half price so I only lose half my money if it doesn't survive.

This miniature rose bush was a healthy one, it looks slightly dry now - I was scared of overwatering.
Every home needs an aloe vera, especially when a home is occupied with a klutz that burns, scrapes and cuts herself on occasion.

I wanted an ivy but, on my shopping spree, the only ivy available was this mixture in an ornamental can so I liked the can well enough, will keep my eye open for an ivy somewhere, someday - especially when one wonders how long this one will last.

Unfortunately this is an example of my loving care. A friend brought me a bright yellow primula as a housewarming gift and look, despite diligent care, what happened to poor little Prim.
Since I've tried everything I could think of to save her this is my last resort. I have heard that cutting back plants gives them new life. I was cutting back gradually but now, since it looked like all was lost I went hog wild - just hope it brings Prim back to life.

Home

Our building is nicely laid out and kept. On the ground floor we have a large lobby and community room but on each floor, by the elevators, are cosy little lobbies where one can relax and socialize.

There's also a balcony with a through-the-trees view of Halifax Harbor

Halifax Harbor

We have finally been given a hint of spring today with a +10 C temperature so I managed to get out and take a couple of pictures. With the pictures most of you post on Opera being very professional in appearance I wonder why I am posting these. However it does give you a slight idea of what the harbour looks like from my building, I'm rather disappointed that my window is on the other side of the building since I enjoy a view of water. This shows one bridge that connects North End Halifax to North End Dartmouth. Slightly to the right of where my camera aimed is 'The Narrows' where the two ships collided causing the widespread destruction of the Halifax Explosion in 1917. There were too many trees to get a picture of that area. And to the left of the picture is the start of Bedford Basin.
This is a view of our street with Bedford Basin at its end.

and this is the front of our building which looks like a very cosy spot to have a rest come warmer weather.

I'm quite pleased with the pleasant neighborhood I find myself in.

Settled in

I have been neglecting to update my Opera friends on our move and I apologize. The main concern was Lamb Chop's adjustment and I'm glad to report she has settled in nicely. This first picture is the view from my window, perhaps not very inviting in our cold weather but it looks to me like a lovely spot to sit out and enjoy a summer's evening.
Pumpkin's favourite toy is the Turbo Scratcher and I highly recommend it to any cat owner, especially to give exercise and entertainment for indoor cats.
And here is the now-reformed indoor cat seeming quite content to be indoors in this cold weather. She took great interest in Pumpkin's activities, perhaps thinking to herself "So this is the way indoor cats are supposed to act". She wasn't overly interested in the turbo scratcher, takes the occasional scratch on it, but bedtime cuddle time certainly interested her. It has been Pumpkin's habit to climb up on my chest once I'm in bed and enjoy petting and purring for a few minutes. Once Lamb Chop observed that pleasant occupation she decided it was exactly what was needed in an indoor life. Consequently she is first in line at bedtime and Pumpkin is relegated to the bottom of the bed until she has decided she has had more than her fare share of affection. She is the dominant family member and Pumpkin very seldom challenges her in anything.
She does enjoy the view from the top and I wonder what goes through her mind. As I read her body language she seems to be content for now to be on the inside looking out.

Moving Mess

, ,

Must take time to let you all know why I have been absent lately. I've been in the process of getting ready for a move into a seniors' apartment complex so have been busy. My son has found a place close enough to his work that he can walk so is comfortably settled with Sylvester and Haley, all of which I do miss. But the aging process marches on for me and I feel I need to make a move into a supervised environment. I will still have my independence and privacy for the present. I can take Pumpkin with me easily but I'll have the difficult job of trying to change Lamb Chop into an indoor cat in the hopes of prolonging her life. It would be too cruel to put her out for adoption at her age, it's taken 14 years for her to become comfortable with me. Also it would be cruel to the one who might be brave enough to adopt her.

It has been difficult trying to pare down my junk, throwing as much out as I can. Thankfully I've had plenty of preparation time because I pack for a few minutes and rest for many, many more. So there is continuous chaos here as witness my living room. Living out of cartons: none completely full, none completely empty.

Lamb Chop was able to find a sunny spot to sleep

until I distrubed her

Eastern Passage

A friend took a few of us out to lunch at Fisherman's Cove Friday. A beautiful fall day, ideal for fish and chips as well as a pleasant stroll along the boardwalk hoping that would take care of those calories. I managed to get a couple of pictures of the entrance to Halifax Harbour from the Dartmouth Side - not much activity but lovely calm ocean views. To the right is McNab's Island which cuts off any shipping, except for small fishing and pleasure boats, on this side of the harbour.

OOOOOPS. My thumb! Long time since I've taken any pictures Homer: Doh!

Don't know why these are all different sizes

This one should have been larger

But this one does show the beautiful day we had I think

and I want to add the things I hold dear about autumn

Crisp fresh air is what I appreciate most after the heavy humidity of summer
Crisp transition to clothing from the back of the closet with cuddly fuzzy sweaters for a cozy wrap
Crisp and clear is the palette of nature; sparkling blue water and trees turning into glorious splendor
Crisp frosted grass spongy under foot
Crisp are the fallen leaves that scrunch under foot
Crisp are cold apples just picked off a tree
Crisp are the shots of adrenaline that energize action
Crisp moonlight against black night skies
Crisp bedroom to go to sleep in
Crisp bedroom to wake up in and cold nose poked just outside the blankets

Memories

Ran across these pics of CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training - a church group) camp taken around 1946. Please keep in mind I was a teenager with a Brownie Box Camera and be kind. We roughed it in those days, straw ticks and spiders aplenty.
This snap gives you an idea of the camping area

and this of the interior

this of our uniforms

and this of the best time of a camp day, campfire

Summertime Respite

, ,

Scanned a few pre-digital-camera shots I liked.
This lunar moth landed on our friend's screen door ending a magical day's visit at her home.
And a couple of views of an evening at the beach a few years ago.

and if anyone is tired of summer heat these snow scenes might feel cooling.
This one I took because of the unusal formation over the eavestroughing

Haley

Since I lucked out in pasting my scanned pics  I thought I'd try to upload a new one and it looks like it worked and I don't know why. When my first short cut didn't work I made a second one which has. So perhaps I'm on the right track, hopefully. She does always look for the best resting spot.

more old pictures

I achieved enough patience to try once more to post pictures. These would have been taken around 1930 give or take a year or so.
This is my Dad and his 'new' car.

This is one of Dad's friends and his motorcycle. Dad had to give up his motorcycle when he married Mom, no way was she having something like that in the family. :furious:

Men's bathing suits sure were different in those days.

And this is Mom's cousin's wedding
