Marie's Musings

A crazy old woman ranting about nothing

The Good Old Days

, ,

These are taken from my mother's photo album captioned 1927.

This is the grandmother I didn't get to know although she was able to see me as a baby before she died and the greatgrandmother I did get to know and love before she died.

This is my father before their marriage with Mom on his right and her friend from nursing school on his left. I'm amused but not impressed by the styles.

Mother titled this one 'Making hay amongst the rocks of Peggy's Cove'. I note the ladies make hay in dresses which I find hard to imagine.

However, my mother, home on vacation from the fashionable U. S., is dressed in the very latest casual style and isn't she proud to show off the heights to which she has risen away from the backwards Nova Scotia.

That's so interesting! Although, I miss say, in spite of not being at all into fashions I couldn't wear my hair like that :yikes:

I wonder how long it took to reach the US in those days!

I'm racking my memory, Mother was a good story teller and loved to talk of her days in Nurses' Training in New York State. (She loved the U.S. and was never happy to be back in Halifax.) They would take the train to Yarmouth and the Ferry across to Bar Harbor, Maine. I think that would take most of the day but it got her into the States. I would imagine it would be the train through to NY State, she trained in Albany, so I suppose that would be another day. Perhaps two days from Halifax to Albany? I'm guessing.

I love these old photo's!
I also enjoy the clothing! & Got a good laugh out of the one where they were making hay on a hill like that..as well as the dresses!

I used to have dreams that I was a part of the early 1900's.
Funny eh?
My mother was in nursing school before she married my dad. (in Holland)
Thanks for sharing. :D

Cheryl, because of my interest in historical novels, those set before about 1850, someone commented that it could indicate my reincarnation from previous times. :eyes: On the same line of thought could it mean your dreams put you in a previous life of early 1900's? :D Of course such thoughts are based on a belief in reincarnation, which I do not espouse. (Once thru this life is hard enough, I sure wouldn't want to think I had to do it over again. :insane: ) But if I were going to dream of a different time I would want to go way back - maybe to the Garden of Eden?

Thanks Lois, I'll see what other styles might be interesting. I have one of Mom in a bathing suit and, even if she is dead, I wouldn't dare put it in a post - I'm sure I would be haunted :D

Thanks, zetorres. I didn't get around to digging out some more of them, have had trouble posting photos and got discouraged.
