Blog Action Day 2008 - Poverty

Well, it’s now officially October 15th in my time zone, so now I write a blog post. What makes October 15th different from any other day you might ask? Well, on October 15th each year thousands of bloggers come together to discuss a pressing issue i the world. This year’s topic is poverty.
Now, to be honest, before I actually heard about this years topic for Blog Action Day, I really didn’t know that much about poverty. I mean, I knew what it was, and I knew it was bad, but other than that, I really didn’t realize how big of an issue it really was.
In the United States, just about 36 million people live below the poverty line. Plus, about 50% of the global population live on less than $2.50 a day. Unless I’m eating ramen noodles for every meal, that isn’t even close to enough to even feed yourself. Also, food isn’t the only expense people have, we also need clothes and shelter to protect us.
As you can see from the statistics above, this needs to stop, we need to do something to change. There are several people, just like us, who have to go without food each day, and wonder weather or not they’ll be able to survive through the next week.
So, you may say, “What can just one person do?” Actually, one person can do a lot, and if it weren’t for even just one person getting the ball rolling and starting things off, nothing would ever get done anyway. I think this video below shows very well how one person really can make a difference. It also shows several great ways we can help stop poverty.
So many of us are SO blessed for all that we have. We have so much and can take it all for granted. Think about what it would be like, even just for one day, to live only on $2.50 alone, nothing else, none of your possessions you currently own. Put yourself in others shoes, and realize how much you really do have.
I think a great way we can help poverty is to give up something we would normally spend money on during a certain day and take that money and donate towards supporting the fight against poverty. For example, give up two meals of the day, then take the money you would normally spend on those meals, and donate it.
Together, we all really can change things. It may not fix the entire problem, but we can make things just a little bit better. If everyone just did their part, we could solve this problem a lot faster than we might realize. So GO! Help change things!

The problem with giving up two meals a day is that it promotes health problems. People should always look after number one first or they'll be in no position to help anyone.
However, giving up chocolate or something similar is an idea. Figure out how much you spend on your favourite snack every week then cut it out and use that money to help the people you see who need it.
