Roger Federer advanced to the third round of the ATP Rome Masters with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Nicolas Almagro on Tuesday.
The world number one lost to Rafael Nadal in a fifth-set tie-breaker in the final last year and the Swiss superstar hopes to get another crack at the two-time defending champion who has a 73-match winning streak on clay.
Federer faced only one break-point in his match against Almagro, a solid claycourt player who defended his title in Valencia last month.
