Innovation (or "The Opera Browser")

I was browsing through the community the other day and I noticed the writing competition. I know I'm not much of a writer but I thought I'd give it a chance, after all I use Opera all day, I mean I must know something about it.
Of course the topic had already been chosen by Opera: Innovation. Ha, they didn't rock their brains with it…
But of course, if there is a word to define Opera's Commitment to technology, that is Innovation.
Take the Desktop Browser for example: there you have a piece of code that can allow you to (and the order is just as it comes to my mind): a) Browse the Internet, securely; b) Send and receive mails in the simplest of ways; c) you can Customize it in any way, shape or form you choose; d) read Feeds and keep them updated without hustle; e) It is an IRC chat client!; and finally UNITE, the soon to be crown jewel of Opera, because come on, did you ever imagine it would be sooo simple to do what Unite let's you do? Create and host a web server at your own PC, Share all kinds of files and Stream music (pretty soon there will be other content to, you bet), Host a chat server for you, your friends, family and whomever you want to invite there, have a cool post it on the fridge when someone dropped by and didn't find you, and the list goes on and on.
So there you have it, with just one example, and to make a long story short, this goes to show people that innovation does not mean copying stuff that works from other people, and camouflaging them with lights and shines; it means creating them, whether they work or not (you can read this insightful statistics: Reality show Results...) and then have other people copy you, yes, you know what I'm talking about.
So kudos Opera, keep spoiling us with brilliant ideas and making the Web whatever we want it to be, one PC (or MAC :D ) at a time.

Hope you like it.

Esteban F. Pérez 5. August 2009, 21:24

I do, I like it. I agree....

Faaaa parezco Stallman.

Don't forget widgets...

Greg Smith 12. August 2009, 00:25

yeah... unite is cool (only problem is I feel like the first person with a telephone... again... I'll have to wait for my friends to ALL catch up)

nice read

Martin 12. August 2009, 09:37

I know what you mean, I've been having the messenger up for about a week now and... well, still waiting. My fridge was packed for a few days though. And I love the document courier, my clients can use it as a mailbox directly to my computer, so practical and simple.

Greg Smith 12. August 2009, 09:40

Document courier is very handy

Gyrobo 12. August 2009, 14:04

It's really strange. Before I friended you, I couldn't leave a comment. Now I can leave comments, but I can't message you.

Can't everything everywhere be perfect?!

Gyrobo 12. August 2009, 14:10

Wait... I've got it. Now I can message you.

Anyway, thanks for those statistics. They're even better as a historical snapshot than when they first came out!

Wouldn't it be nice to have a similar compilation of preferences from browser users of the 1990s? Or the 2010s? I'm getting ahead of myself...

Martin 12. August 2009, 14:17

@Gyrobo "Anyway, thanks for those statistics. They're even better as a historical snapshot than when they first came out!"

Yes, they are quite revealing.

Gyrobo 12. August 2009, 14:20

I remember reading that post two years ago.

"The status bar is quite popular, so we consider turning it on by default again."

It's like a time capsule!

Gyrobo 13. August 2009, 23:06

I just added your post as a favorite (or "favourite?" I don't know how they spell it in Argentina).

Hope you'll visit mine. It's AWESOME.

Martin 13. August 2009, 23:47

it would be "Favorito" (in spanish) and Thanks for the vote.

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 00:51

Actually, I was just wondering how English speakers spell it there.

I can't imagine the US still has any influence over spelling.

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 01:21

Argentina ? Buenos Aires... I'm told is the Paris of America

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 01:25

One of our governors recently vanished for a week and turned up in Buenos Aires with a mystery woman.

His wife wishes he'd stayed there.

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 01:43

ha, ha

And 'governor' is such a funny word archaic or London slang even...

Like, 'hey governor, you got any spare change' - from a beggar

Gov or governor is like 'mister' or faciciously LORD

Tickles me that the US still has GOVERNORS...

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 02:25

My state's last governor resigned after he was caught soliciting prostitutes.

In 2006 he won 69% of the vote.

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 02:30

69 you say, he blew a comfortable position to get so compromised

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 02:39

He kept his socks on.

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 02:41

sorry 'she'

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 02:46

It's all still quite a load. I'd vote for him again.

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 02:48

I felt the same about Clinton

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 02:52

US presidents are limited to a max of two terms. But he COULD have won again.

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 02:56

I've this memory of Clinton with a very drunk Boris Yeltsin... it really makes me laugh...

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 03:13

Wish I could've been there.

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 07:08

- I'll try find a youtube clip for you ...

Nice! and @gregsmithsays sorry I didn't Understand the favourite thing, that's how it would be, since I studied british oriented english here, although the Opera dictionary wants to correct it to favorite  BTW, I'm in Paraná, in the province of Entre Ríos and I would be Riht Here [img]http://files.myopera.com/Mastermind1/files/Captura.JPG

Greg Smith 14. August 2009, 10:27

- nice

Gyrobo 14. August 2009, 14:01

I totally love Opera 10's spell checker.

That was the only real problem I had with future versions, because the old plugin was so clunky.

Gyrobo 15. August 2009, 01:48

Oh, hey, Martin!

I can't seem to message you, just wanted to let you know I voted for your post.

If you wanted to vote for my post also, that would be great.
