Still Peerless

Simon Mayo had what turned out to be a bit of a love-in with the creator of The Wire, David Simon, on his Five Live show on Tuesday afternoon. Find the 16th September podcast here until 22nd of the month.

Two further thoughts -

  • Why is no one in Britain making television this good?
  • Why hasn't the controller of, say, BBC-4 or More 4, looked into picking up the second run rights for this show? You can bet money everyone who is anyone in UK television has seen it, yet it doesn't seem to occur to them to bring it to a wider audience.

"Why is no one in Britain making television this good?"

My guess is that the people in charge of British TV have a remit of serving up the maximum number of channels full of the maximum amount of shite at the minimum cost. I think it's actually enshrined in the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Act of 2003.

Can't wait for Digital.

not only that Matt, but the wire is doing very nice DVD sales.
no doubt they will finally show it on Auntie once they have squeezed as much out as poss.

The four seasons that are available are all in the top eleven p: at Amazon.

The Wire is not being held back by anyone for DVD sales reasons, I don't think - the deal that FX have for it here in the UK was exclusive. Whether it still is, I dunno. I've not read anywhere of Controller BBC-2 beating a path to FX's door having found a gap in all the lifestyle shit and BBC-1 repeats for something half-way decent.

Yeh yeh yeh. Never seen it, but ask yourselves...Is it REALLY as good as Dad's Army? THERE's a show that I could NEVER get tired of watching year after year....after year..after year...

Well for me watching programme like this just wouldn'have worked if it had been scheduled onb one of the main TV networks. I dont have Sky Plus and so I'd have had to have ensured I'd been in at the same time each week for 13 weeks. With a Box set you can watch each season in relatively intensive one-episode-a-day sessions. Helps me follow plots, remember who is who and get more emotioanally involved.

So stuff the networks and their lifestyle programming. The only downside of Box Sets is their price. I dont know about you all, but I dont feel any need to actually keep box sets after watching them...it would be good if there was a Box-Set swapshop out their.

Oh and Season 3 is just awesomely good....fo'sho'

That's a nice idea Matt. We have managed to catch a few series that never made it to terrestrial via Lovefilm DVD rental (by post) but despite prioritising The Wire it has not materialised, which I suspect is explained by the above discussion.

I was looking at various things that I want to see it HMV the other day but like you say, I don't actually want to own them, just get to see them.
