My Opera is closing 3rd of March

From PClinux to Ubuntu 8.04

As you can read in the last post I use Linux as my OS. I was running PCLinuxOS which is a great distribution, but it has some problems (at least on my box) that made me get rid of it. It crashed too much and Opera wasn't running very well, especially with flash content. I think that all these problems were because of me and not the OS (except the Opera part) but I just got dissapointed and got rid of it.

I had a smaller HDD running Ubuntu 7.10 a few months ago just to try it. I liked it, I liked it very much and I ran it for a few weeks ocassionally. One day the HDD got messed up because it was very old or something, I tried to fix it, but I couldn't so I got it out of the PC. I got mad at the HDD because I wanted more Ubuntu, but heck, what can I do?

Back on PCLinux. PCLinux has some features better than Ubuntu, like the PCLinuxOS Control Center for example. There, you can setup all the hardware and everything related to the OS in one single place. That's very good, because in Ubuntu you have to go to System > Administration and look in the menu for what you're looking for, or System > Preferences > _______. That's a lot of work and can be confusing sometimes. That's one key feature that I really miss from PCLos. Also PCLinux runs KDE way better than Ubuntu does, hands down.

What really made me make the jump from PCLinux was the hype behind the newlly released Ubuntu 8.04. I was counting the days of it's arrival and I was in their website at 12am refreshing the browser the day it launched hoping to see it's release. A few days later I decided to install Ubuntu 7.10 on my PC because I have the cd. So I did it, I kissed PCLinux goodbye (for a while) and went on with the installation of 7.10. It went smooth as silk and then I upgraded everything and made the jump to Ubuntu 8.04. I started using it and fell in love with it instantly. Then I downloaded Opera 9.5 beta 2 and saw the incredible performance in Ubuntu. I haven't seen Opera run like this in a while. It just runs perfect.

Ubuntu feels like it was meant to run on my box, I've been running it for a week now and I've encoutered 0 crashes, bugs etc. It's like my dream OS. It's beautiful, super fast, solid, has a ton of software and runs Compiz Fusion very, very smooth, way better than PCLos.

Well it's getting late for me and I have to sleep. I just wanted to let you know my experience with Ubuntu in my computer. It may be different in yours, so if you're a Linux user I suggest you try a few distros before deciding which one is for you. Until now Ubuntu 8.04 is my favorite OS of all time (until something better comes along).

From PClinux to Ubuntu 8.04Microsoft fears Linux? I think so!

Sadly my computer wouldn't upgrade to ubuntu 8.04, so I tried xubuntu 8.04 was not impressed really. Now I'm having to run on opensuse 11.0 which is OK.
I did try to install gnu/solaris but it kept restarting for no reason during installation.
I guess I'll have to buy a brand new PC made specifically for linux :clown:

Yes Hardy Heron is a real improvement over Gutsy as it is less of a softy as it use to crash too pften(Gutsy). Hardy has better hardware support now especially Printers/Scanners. Though after using KDE 3.5 in openSUSE and Mandruva, GNOME in Hardy seems a bloat and too unresponsive to me. Thouh i am dual-booting Hardy & Mandriva 2008.1
