Vanlentine live in rome during the third century that was long, long ago! At that time rome was ruled by an emperor named claudius. He didn't like emperor claudius and he wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared his feelings.
Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men jst didn't want to fight in war. They didn't want to live their wives and families. Nt many men signed up, this made claudius furious. He had a crazy idea, he thought that if men were nt married, they would nt mind joining the army, so he decided nt to allow anymore marriages.
Valentine favorite activities was to marry couples. Even after claudius pass his law, valentine kept performing marriage ceremonies--secretly.
One night while performing marriage, he was caught, while the couples escape in time. He was thrown in jail and was told his punishment was death.
Many people came to visit him they thrown flowers and notes, and let him knw they believed in love. One of the young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allows her to visit him in the cell. Sometimes they sit and talk for hours, she agreed that he did the right thing by ignoring the emperor.
One the day he was to die, he left his friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it,"love from your valentine". The note start the custom of exchanging love messages on valentine's day, and it was written on the day he died, february 14, 269 A.D.
