Hook Head

, , , ...

It's pouring rain as I write this yuck down

But yesterday was half descent so we decided to head for the sea. Specifically the lighthouse at Hook Head.

Just to add to the adventure we went by way of Passage East and took the ferry.

You can't really make them out, but on the cliffs were a herd of goats that we drove by down to the village. There was no way to stop and we didn't have time to go back as we just caught the ferry. Otherwise I would have gotten some close-ups. There were some real Puck goats in the herd.

The lighthouse is well set up as an attraction. There was a good restaurant, a play area for children, even free Wi-Fi up Though I didn't have time to use it.

The tour of the lighthouse was very good. The guide was great - friendly and knowledgeable - and there were some stunning views.

After the tour we took a short walk along the shore. Mom spotted a seal popping its head up for a look but everytime I tried for a photo it stubbornly stayed under until the rain, which had held off up to then, started and we headed back to the car.

We took a different route home, stopping in New Ross for a coffee and then on through Inistioge, Thomastown, and Bennettsbridge. Always a lovely drive.

It's the 30th anniversary of PAC-MAN and Google is celebrating with a special logo.

San has put me on a musical bent with her recent posts.

This song is currently being used in a TV ad. Luckily, you can hear a line or two of the chorus which makes it easy enough to find the original with Google.

If you weren't already feeling old

, ,

Yesterday I told you about Wallace and Gromit's 20th birthday. And I gave you a link to Google's UK home page.

In the comments folks seemed surprised that it had been 20 years since their first appearance. I was too to be honest. smile

Well, Google now has another holiday logo up and this time it's Sesame Street's 40th anniversary faint

So yeah, I'm feeling kinda old.

Anyway, here's a classic moment I remember from (what I'm beginning to realise is a distant) childhood.

Another one, after my time, but I recall it being on the news when Joe Raposo's death was announced.

And finally, just because it was in the results when I searched for "Sesame Street Google"

Happy Birthday Sesame Street party You may be 40, but you've never gotten old.

Cracking

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that today is Wallace And Gromit's 20th birthday.

Aardman Animations is celebrating, naturally.

But Google also decided to mark the event with one of their Holiday logos.

If you missed it, I think it's only on the UK site and I'm posting this kinda late, you can see it here.

Now the obvious thing would be to stick a YouTube video in here, but it seems that (for reasons of copyright I presume) I can only give you a link.

So go have a look at Cracking Contraptions - The Tellyscope.

My internet connection is driving me nuts

, , , ...

For about a week now it's been really flaky, partly down to the weather I think. It's improved along with the weather, but still drops out regularly. It seems to be worse in the evenings, which of course is the only time I have to be on-line rolleyes

If it keeps up I'll have to do something, ie. ring my ISP. For now we'll just have to grin and bear it. bigsmile

Party like it's 1234567889

, , , ...

Just barely enough time to post little tidbit of geeky-ness.

In less than 30 minutes it's going to be 1234567890 in Unix Time. party

While it probably means more to your computer than to you there are some celebrations going on.

If I was in Vancouver I'd probably head for the Irish Heather, as I'm not I'll just raise a quiet glass on my own. cheers

UPDATE:

The brother sent me a screen shot of the big moment.

My College in the news

, , , ...

Tipperary Institute were hosting Games Fleadh 2008 on Thursday. It a series of computer game programming competitions designed to get students interested in software development, programming, and computer game design.

I wasn't competing, my hand put me out of action at just the wrong time. But I was there helping out on the day. If you watch closely, you might just spot a familiar back.

Events like this are important because fewer Irish students are choosing ICT as a career. If the computer companies lose their workforce, they're going to start pulling out of the country.

Well, I think I'm back. I hope I'm back. My connection was up and down like a yo-yo all weekend irked but it seems to have settled now.

So, what did I miss? (Quite a bit from the size of my watch list faint)

It was the August bank holiday, unfortunately someone forgot to tell the weather. sad Lots of events were cancelled. Including cry the National Steam Rally in Stradbally. Wish I'd known before driving all the way out there. rolleyes

Moving on... Visitor time again. My cousin and his family who were holidaying out in Galway are coming for a few days before the head back to Canada. And, out of the blue, I heard from another cousin who works on a yacht in Spain. She's visiting a friend in Sligo and wants to come and visit us too. I should ask Bord Fáilte for a cut.
