A Canadian in Ireland

Doesn't have the ring of "An American in Paris" (or even "An American at Opera") but what can you do?

STICKY POST

Half 4 in the morning...

And here I am setting up a blog. I must be nuts, or insomniac, or something.

Not sure what else I should say, I want to try and set the tone. Well, don't expect anything profound. Not on purpose anyway.

Look. I'll go off, get some sleep, have a think, and see what else I come up with.

Busy busy

Just thought I'd take a minute now that lectures have finished and before my final exams start in two weeks to check in and see how you all are.

It was a bit mad coming up to the end. All the lecturers trying to make sure they have all the material covered and the assignments assigned. Three tests and two papers in the last two weeks. Overall my marks are ok. I'll still want to do well on the exams, but I'm not panicking... yet.

Otherwise we've been trying to get all the arrangements for the trip to Vancouver organised - accommodation, car rental, etc. Though the brother has been a big help with local knowledge.

I was going to surprise him with a pair of Guinness cufflinks for his tux, but I wanted to make sure that he would need them. So, trying to be sneaky, I asked the maid of honor if she could try and find out.

Turned out he was going to ask me to get him a pair. Great minds think alike (and something about fools  )

I'll be popping in and out, but don't expect to see too much of me 'til the end of May. :spock:

Some of you already know Pfelelep a very talented, and funny, artist here on My Opera who draws amazing cartoons.

A while back he held a contest on his blog.

I sent him a submission. And I was lucky enough to be one of the winners :hat:

This meant I won a sketch by Pfelelep. :eyes: He sent me a link so that I could download it...
But I'd like to send you the ORIGINAL sketch by postal services.

Which was more than generous of him. :faint:

It took a little longer than it should have...
the sketch I sent you just went back to me: it seems that I misspelled the address (or I'm sketching better than I'm writing).
(I'm sure it was the mail and not his fault)

But it finally arrived in the post today

What can I say? How about I'm thrilled to bits. Thanks Pfelelep

It just hit me

The other day I was talking to someone about my brother's fiance, and I referred to her as
My future sister-in-law.

After I'd said it, the full meaning of that phrase suddenly dawned on me.

I got tagged by Marcus

You know the drill:

1. Link to who tagged you.
2. Post the rules.
3. List the last book you read, Tv show you watched, Film you watched, Song you heard and Game you played.
4. Tag five people to do the same.

  • Book: The Diamond Age or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer by Neal Stephenson. A Christmas present from my future sister-in-law. I asked her to buy me something she liked since we have similar tastes and I wasn't disappointed
  • TV show: Corner Gas The last thing I sat down and gave my full attention to. Other than that I've just been channel surfing. Re-runs :yuck:
  • Film: Tales from Earthsea I went to the video shop on a whim over the bank holiday and just happened to spot it on the shelves. Surprised that both Timothy Dalton and Cheech Marin were in the cast.
  • Game: Sudoku I'm totally hooked

Since this meme is well and truly finished I won't bother tagging anybody else.

Sorry it took so long Marcus :o:

EDIT:

And I forgot to post the song. Homer: Doh! Ok, this was on the radio on the drive home. It's been getting lots of air play as it's their new single and It's starting to grow on me.

For Your Paddy's Day Viewing Pleasure

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh... Happy St. Patrick's Day!

A post by Melissa got me thinking about Irish films and films set in Ireland. Here's a few that I think you'd enjoy.

So, in no particular order

Films I'd Personally Recommend

Films I Haven't Seen But Have Heard Good Things About

And finally, a couple of short films that are favourites of mine. And you can see them right here on the web. You might also be interested if you've never heard Irish spoken.

Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom

Fluent Dysphasia

I'm sure I've left out plenty more. So if you have any you want to add, or you've got something to say about my list please leave a comment.

My College in the news

, , , ...

Tipperary Institute were hosting Games Fleadh 2008 on Thursday. It a series of computer game programming competitions designed to get students interested in software development, programming, and computer game design.

I wasn't competing, my hand put me out of action at just the wrong time. But I was there helping out on the day. If you watch closely, you might just spot a familiar back.

Events like this are important because fewer Irish students are choosing ICT as a career. If the computer companies lose their workforce, they're going to start pulling out of the country.

Twice by Louis and Marcus

So I'd better do this before I get hit again.

The Rules

Link to who tagged you
Post 5 jobs you would never do, with reasons why
Tag 5 people to do the same

So, my five jobs:

  1. Work in a call center - been there, done that. NEVER again.
  2. Any job where I'd have to deal with spiders - :yuck:
  3. Construction worker in Ireland - this is no climate to be working outside.
  4. Radioactive Mouse turd cleaner - not for the reason you think. It's so specialised I'd be afraid of putting someone else out of work :D
  5. Anything in sales - just doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

And now to tag some folks.
