A Canadian in Ireland

Doesn't have the ring of "An American in Paris" (or even "An American at Opera") but what can you do?

DIY and blood sacrifice

,

Tackled a bit of flat-pack assembly yesterday

As is sometimes the case the gods of DIY demanded an offering for the successful completion of the project. Namely chunks from two of my fingers. :yikes:

And just to add insult to injury I had to finish the step I was doing before the glue set and then bandage my wounds.

But once the bleeding stopped (and the screaming) it actually went quite smoothly.

Here's the end results:

And for braver souls a slightly disgusting picture of my wounds.

The results are inThree days to the flight - Six days to the wedding

lokutus_prime 23. June 2008, 12:50

looks good

( - hope your fingers heal soon)

Mickeyjoe_irl 23. June 2008, 13:25

Yeah clean.

Thanks Loku

Me too, still very tender. :frown:

hungryghost 23. June 2008, 15:38

:faint:

Yes, this is what the blood-hungry gods of DIY always want...glad it wasn't worse! And good work with the chest of drawers :D

Mickeyjoe_irl 23. June 2008, 20:47

I did warn you about the picture hungry.

H82typ 23. June 2008, 22:27

Nice chest! Did you leave any blood in it? Just a flesh wound, I've cut myself worse shaving. Must have hurt, though.

Mickeyjoe_irl 23. June 2008, 23:02

I think I managed to get the worst of it mopped up. As clean will tell you wounds on your fingers bleed like billy-o.

I wish I had cut myself. This was catching the skin so it was torn / scraped off. The flaps of skin did fall back into place to cover the wounds.

momable 24. June 2008, 00:31

Nice DIY! Take care of those fingers -- you need 'em!

sanshan 24. June 2008, 03:13

Nice. Did you pop those blood blisters? (sorry, I used to be a first aider, it's all very interesting to me :D)

Mickeyjoe_irl 24. June 2008, 11:41

I'm beginning to wonder Elly, these are the same two that were taped up for weeks when I broke my hand.

It was my Dad's standard solution for any injury - amputation.

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

No San, should I? The one on my ring finger is pretty impressive. Might be time for a new photo.

lokutus_prime 24. June 2008, 17:18

I'm getting concerened. All this talk about cut fingers. Medals will be struck.
One for me, becuz I'm brave enough to read about all this.:eyes:
And one for you, becuz you have not flinched in the telling :D

Mickeyjoe_irl 24. June 2008, 18:19

It's easy for me Loku, the worst is over.

But it's all fresh for you, poor thing. awww

lokutus_prime 24. June 2008, 19:20

"But it's all fresh for you, poor thing"

That's the problem. I don't hear a word about you for millennia.
Except for some vague rumour, from Sky Captain, about "Mickeyjoe away somewhere on a mission".

Then you return from Krypton with your indestructible digits damaged.

I can tell you it unnerved me to learn about that. :yikes:

Mickeyjoe_irl 24. June 2008, 20:42

 I think you have me confused with someone else

Though I have to say his life sounds a lot more interesting.

lokutus_prime 24. June 2008, 21:14

You could be right

ok - no more joking

Mickeyjoe_irl 24. June 2008, 22:37

Don't stop on my account. :D

lokutus_prime 24. June 2008, 22:53

No, its ok, Clar.. damn! - nearly gave away our 'little secret' - I mean Kal.
It's really Ok Kal. there are some things you and I cannot openly speak of here.
But if I say certain buzzwords - such as "faster than a speeding pizza", "able to leap tall Giants Causeway stones at a single bound" you will know that your 'mission' is safe with me. I don't live in Calgary, Ireland or Kansas but if there is one thing I know it is this - you are here for a purpose. and it has nothing to do with damaging your digits. Ok Kal, if there's any way I can help you get over this propensity to cut yourself like one of the humans do then call me. I have a place buried far up north where you can play around with a lot of crystals and see Marlon Brando, if you are really tripped out.

Up up and away...

sugarwinx 25. June 2008, 16:52

Ikea?

Mickeyjoe_irl 26. June 2008, 09:48

Thanks Loku, I knew I could count on your discretion. I don't think there is a cure for being a klutz though.

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Does it look that good sugar? Afraid there is no Ikea in the Republic yet. I think there's one up the North in Belfast. The chest came from Lidl, which is a discount supoermarket chain.

Do you have a similar shop?

lokutus_prime 26. June 2008, 13:19

"Thanks Loku, I knew I could count on your discretion"

Discretion is my byeword
and no one will ever see what I wrote to you, K.

blooooooooooooooooooooood...

...for the DIY goooooood... cow :D:D:D

I wouldn't have done better than you actually.

Mickeyjoe_irl 28. June 2008, 11:44

Which job?

The job I did on the chest?

Or the one I did on my fingers? :D

pfelelep 28. June 2008, 13:15

both of them! :D

sprogger 30. June 2008, 12:31

All DIY requires a sacrifice. I have seen entire small villages in the west offered up, just for a mid sized bookcase from Atlantic Homecare.
And even then the center shelves started to bend after a couple of months.

The Gods of hammer and saw must love the blessed mickeyjoe (assuming your fingers didnt turn black, wither up and fall off)
May your monument hold aloft a bed side lamp for eterniny.

...Hope your fingers get well soon...

lokutus_prime 30. June 2008, 13:30

sprogger - "the blessed mickeyjoe", as he is now known among the clergy in Ireland, is venerated because of all that has happened. And when they bring stout sensible colleens to his shrine (yet to be made out of canvas and wood, as soon as his hand heals) they may well beg, in hushed respectfullyyours tone, "give us a sign that shows us the way"... he will smile encouragingly, then he will lift his two fingers up in a meaningful gesture of sentiment.

:D

sprogger 30. June 2008, 13:54

lokutus, famously known as prime
I submit to you that the blessed and revered Mickeyjoe has no need for the veneration of the lesser clergy of other organized religions. Being as he is the spiritual leader and founder of his own religion.

The Church Of The Walkers God
And having foreseen the calamitous accident in his future even established a branch to deal with the DIY Gods.

The Order of the Wholly Hammered
As with most religions there are disagreements, in this case whether its wholly or holy

pfelelep 30. June 2008, 13:56

:D:D:D

lokutus_prime 30. June 2008, 16:19

Reverendneverend scrogger, I have heard it mooted - among factions on the fringe who style themselves after a mythic math hero (known for proclamations such as "the pi is falling!" - that the order (whose mighty emblazon I see here) should be known as The Order of the Hole He Hammered .

Pray tell me Brer scrogger whether such a notion be a blasphemy or a bless for me?

sprogger 30. June 2008, 16:49

I fear that it is my dreadful duty to inform you that you have been led astray by blasphemers and heretics, the veritable underbelly of the blessed and holy institution that is the COTWG.

They were purged from the church and their names stricken from the records, their ashes scattered across the world

And as for their proclamations " the pi is falling " I say HA! unto that for surely everyone is aware that pi is a mathematical constant.

Mickeyjoe_irl 30. June 2008, 18:17

At this point, seeing that things have gotten totally beyond my control, all I can say is.

Mmmm... Pi

sprogger 30. June 2008, 18:29

Oh lordy!! tis the revered one him self.

Hows the digits doing

lokutus_prime 30. June 2008, 19:03

"....I say HA! unto that for surely everyone is aware that pi is a mathematical constant. "

...but surely, O wise and muchgrovelledto, Supereme revnevdng,.. surely this is all pi in the sky? Has not a far eastern duo, they of the non-rounded viewing ports, increased the value of the constant, thus rendering it in to an inconstant? It is recorded in 2002 (the only year that ever immediately followed the year 2001) that two Japanese scientists calculated pi to 1.24 trillion digits using 400 hours of supercomputer time. Written in 9-point New Courier font this number would extend for 1.5 million miles.

I am confused. Both my brain cells are in conflict.
O please resolve this heretical thought within my capacious, save for the two cells, brain, O mighty etcetera.

sprogger 30. June 2008, 19:51

"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
Douglas Adams

Yea verily and forsooth let the word go forth the the only truth is The Word. The Word as Spoken by the trice blessed one, the walker, bearer of the staff of freedom, the outcast genius, spiritual leader and all round good egg... Mickeyjoe.

His very presence can change natural laws for even gravity must obey The Word. Pi is but nothing before his grandeur, a mere sliver of a slice you might say.

So oh misled primer let me add that even if your duo from the ultimate west were correct in their blasphemous preaching of the inflated value of Pi. That very argument would prove that Pi is not falling but rising instead.

I will add, though I am unworthy, in HIS words
"Mmmm... Pi"

I feel that if you study this scripture, you shall recieve enlightenment.

Though it may take years or even a lifetime of dedicated study and meditation.

If all else fails, a bottle of holy Irish communion whisky. When you awake you will find that your doubts will have vanished, along with a chunk of the previous evenings memories.

Yadda blessings yadda yadda holy things.

Mickeyjoe_irl 30. June 2008, 19:54

The fingers are grand sprogger. Still a bit mangled looking (the blood blisters have blackened, but everything is still firmly attached) but not bothering me.

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Loku, I have thought long and hard - though not too long or too hard, it makes my brain hurt - and have come to the following conclusions.

With hammers the spelling matters not, it's your aim that counts. As my post (and fingers) will testify.

And the only constant for pi, to however many digits, is that it's better with ice cream.

sanshan 1. July 2008, 18:17

Oh my , look what I've missed whilst on holiday.

galadriel 3. July 2008, 00:08

Ouch.

When I hurt myself on stuff, I throw it out...

Mickeyjoe_irl 3. July 2008, 16:23

I know San, sprogger and Loku really got on a roll there. :D

BTW, the blood blister came off my ring finger and now I have a little divot at the top of the nail.

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Thanks Kimbers, but I could hardly throw it out after all I went through.

sanshan 3. July 2008, 17:20

Pictures! Let's see if it rivals Hungry's toenails!

Mickeyjoe_irl 4. July 2008, 21:23

Ah no San, decidedly unimpressive next to the toes.

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

You're posting rings around us Loku with your comments on the subject of Pi.

I conceed... mercy, uncle, enough. :ko:

lokutus_prime 4. July 2008, 21:31

..I wave my Loku wand and pfffft! all rings are vanished :D

galadriel 5. July 2008, 00:09

That's true. Well now you can tell your friends 'I went through a lot of blood and tears to put that cabinet together'

Mickeyjoe_irl 5. July 2008, 08:47

Thank you oh great, and merciful, Loku

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

There was sweat too Kim

lokutus_prime 5. July 2008, 10:25

Verily, I have learned a lesson.
I shall not encircle here again :D

Mickeyjoe_irl 5. July 2008, 11:06

As long as you make a point to call in occasionally. :D

Duplo 16. July 2008, 15:19

Nice job Mickey J

But looks like a real painful task completed.
Fingers still all messed up?

Mickeyjoe_irl 17. July 2008, 07:08

Ah no, good as new.

Shame really, I wanted more pity. awww

Duplo 17. July 2008, 20:45

Well just let me go find a hammer, i can fix that for you real quick

Mickeyjoe_irl 17. July 2008, 20:58

Thanks for the offer but I'm grand with it, really

Duplo 17. July 2008, 22:17

Phew...
Somehow I am relieved to hear that.
