Hunting the Wren
Saturday, 27. December 2008, 00:43:03
The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
St. Stephen's Day was caught in the furze,
Although he was little his honour was great,
Jump up me lads and give us a treat.
Up with the kettle and down with the pan,
And give us a penny to bury the wren.
The 26th is St. Stephen's Day in Ireland. Traditionally a day to go hunt the Wren.
Our family tradition is to do the charity walk in Gattabawn.
It was a good day for it, dry and quite mild. Though with all the wet weather some parts of the trail were very boggy. As I learned when I ended up to my knees in a bog.
Not the end of the world, I was practically dried out by the time we got back.
On the route we passed by this ruin which apparently was an old hotel. Back at the turn of the last century there was a mineral spa here.
So after three hours and roughly 9 miles we made it back for a cup of hot soup. I don't' know much about this car beyond that it was parked up in the yard of the pub.
And on the way home we passed by this old castle - note the rather precarious looking piece of wall wedged at the top.
Oh and there was no sign of the wren.

It was beef and barley Angeliki. Yum
Thanks Allan, I should add that it's a Singer - there's no connection to the sewing machine makers. It's a rear-engined model called a Chamois. (Wikipedia is so handy

I believe that one of our earliest, if not the earliest exchange here on Opera was last year, about St. Stephen's Day and you mentioned the hunt for the wren at that time. This post provided a nostalgic moment for me.
This year's Feast of Stephen for us centered around the journey to the veterinary hospital, but no wrens were involved. That chapter has been happily resolved, at least for the moment and we have our dog home.
