A Canadian in Ireland

Doesn't have the ring of "An American in Paris" (or even "An American at Opera") but what can you do?

A long and quite intricate series of profanities

, , ,

You would have been impressed if you're into that sort of thing...

My laptop, less than a year old, is dead. rip

It was working just fine when I fired it up after we got home (it didn't make the trip to Spain) and I was using it for most of the day. I'd just finished showing a friend the holiday pictures after downloading them from the camera and wiping the card. The battery finally ran out so I shut it down, plugged it in to charge and...

nothing

No charging light, no response from the power button, and the light on the power adapter was flashing - something I'd never seen before. I tired plugging it in and out. I tried a different mains socket. I tried powering it on with and without the battery. But no joy.

So I did a little research and got some bad news. Seems that the power connector can break where it's soldered to the motherboard and there doesn't seem to be a simple fix.

I'm going to bring it back to the shop on Saturday. It should still be under warranty. Though at the minute I'm more concerned with my files. My last backup was a few weeks ago and obviously doesn't have those holiday snaps. :frown:

I'm posting this from my old banger of a desktop. Which booted straight up after several months sitting in the corner. One small ray of sunshine in this massive _ _ _ _ storm.

Makes me want to hang on to my 6 year old pentium 2 laptop I bought used from a Chinese teacher! It's slow, but I don't think it's ever going to die.

The same thing happened to a laptop I had. We scrapped it and kept the memory card.

I perfectly understand your feelings.
My son's desktop never ran correctly for me and he said it ran fine for him -- but then it didn't run for him, either -- ended up, he just didn't want it to be taken away from him (teenagers!!!). We just recently ended up sending it back to HP and now it is better than when we purchased it! After all the electronic chatting with HP reps and the talking to Best Buy, where they said it was fine -- except the last time we brought it in and they said to send it in to the shop -- finally it is working!! But the backup disc got scratched and so nothing will load in. So, it is always something...
Tomorrow will be better!

EEEk...hope all was recovered properly Mickey.....

but on the bright side, you can now get a HP Voodoo Envy! Yes!

Mickeyjoe_irl 21. July 2009, 21:13

Yeah San, they don't build them like they used to.

I'm hoping they will be able to repair it Sarah, it's still under warranty.

That's quite a saga Elly. Shame about the backup, were you able to recover anything.

Working on it hungry, I got and external hard drive enclosure so that I could pull the data off my drive. Got all my documents, pictures(including Spain :hat: ), music, etc. but I have a problem with the email in Opera. The messages are there, but they're all blank.

I could go for the HP, or I could do something else.

hungryghost 22. July 2009, 14:51

yesh...you could....I'm thinking of going for the HP Pavillion DV2 myself. My trusty IBM is finally on its way out :frown:

Mickeyjoe_irl 22. July 2009, 23:07

I already did

I also got my email problem sorted.

Sorry to here that about about the trusty blue.

hungryghost 23. July 2009, 16:00

:eyes: A man of decision!

momable 24. July 2009, 04:10

My daughter's external hard drive stopped -- is there a way to open it up and get the disc and transfer everything on it?

No, didn't get anything. Fortunately it was only patches for my son's games and a few fave photos from the net and a few recipes. All can be refound on the www.

hungryghost 24. July 2009, 15:15

trusty blue will soon (I think) be replaced by plodding H - it's a nice little laptop, but not a thinkpad. :frown:

Mickeyjoe_irl 25. July 2009, 16:35

It should work Elly, AFAIK it's just a standard hard disk inside. Provided that the disk is ok you should be able to put it into another external drive - you can get them fairly cheap without a disk already inside - or you can install it as a 2nd disk in another computer and get the data that way.

Shame about the backup, trying to refind thing would drive me mad.

Is anything, hungry? And I thought you'd be calling it saucy.

momable 26. July 2009, 19:16

Thanks for the 411, Mic! I'll tell my daughter.

hungryghost 11. August 2009, 06:17

Always on the ball! :D

But good news, I resurrected little Blue again! So trusty thinkpad is roaring along quite nicely again.

And how are you?

Mickeyjoe_irl 15. August 2009, 11:20

How did you get on Elly?

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

Good news hungry.

I finally organised to have the broken laptop collected. Hopefully it will b up and running again soon.
