I hoped that I would be able to post this yesterday, but the server monkeys weren't having it. I spent most of the evening uploading my photos. By the time I had that finished it was bedtime.
We've been in the grips of an hard stretch of winter weather with nearly a week of daily snow falls. Most unusually it hasn't been melting, but has just hung around getting deeper.
It has caused major disruption all over the east of the country, particularly transportation - roads and Dublin airport being the most prominent. The worst, personally, has been the roads. Last week it was snowing every morning when I woke up and I had to crawl down the back lanes where I live to reach a major road to get to college.
It finally broke on Friday, which I had off, and yesterday was clear though the roads were only half thawed and very slippery.
This morning the snows came again. At least it's melting on the same day.
Moving on... Visitor time again. My cousin and his family who were holidaying out in Galway are coming for a few days before the head back to Canada. And, out of the blue, I heard from another cousin who works on a yacht in Spain. She's visiting a friend in Sligo and wants to come and visit us too. I should ask Bord Fáilte for a cut.
So I was watching a documentary on The Saw Doctors on Telly this evening and they were playing this song.
Perfect for the last couple of weeks here in Ireland. There hasn't been a day without some sort of rain. No wonder Sprogger has the Blahs.
One of our cats got caught in a cloud-burst today. He came in utterly drowned. He was so wet he actually shook himself like a dog to get rid of the worst of it. It doesn't seem to bother him at all though, he just licks himself dry and goes to sleep.
A cousin of mine wrote asking if I could organise some rain for her visit this autumn.
It never rains but it pours. Three birthdays in a row this week.
Sunday would have been Dad's, and of course Mam's was on Tuesday. And then when the brother rang to give his wishes we found out that his girlfriend had her birthday on Monday
Ah well, I fired off a quick e-card - better late than never - and I made sure that it's in the diary for next year.
Speaking of it pouring, the plan was to go to a beach this weekend and have a picnic to celebrate. Looks like the weather is not going to co-operate.
In other news:
Still working on the Vancouver photos. I have them in Picasa and sorted into albums. Still have to do some editing and get them uploaded.
The comedy festival was huge fun. Even though the weather wasn't great for it either. The previous two years really spoiled us. I wasn't on the Flying Squad in the end, but I was made a floating volunteer. Basically, instead of working just one venue I got sent wherever the needed an extra body. A bit more work, but I got to see way more shows this way.
So many great comics I can't list them all here. But some highlights were (in alphabetical order):
I didn't get to see Glenn Wool perform, but he spotted me in my Canucks shirt and we chatted for a bit. Turns out he lived in Saskatchewan for a while too.
But my Comedy Hero has to be Ed Byrne Not only a really nice guy and very funny, but he found my wallet when I lost it backstage at one of his shows.
Nothing else to report really, so mind how you go.
It's been an interesting weekend., with lots to tell So I'll just get straight to it.
Things started on Friday with some excitement down the village. The Post Office was robbed A couple came in and took €4,000 in pension payments, and the postmistress' handbag. When they went to make their escape though, their getaway car wouldn't start I guess we know what the money was for
The robbers made their way up to the school where they asked staff if they could call a taxi. Unfortunately, taxis are reluctant to come all the way out from the city so that was unsuccessful. Then the staff tried to contact a local mechanic to repair the car but he was an hour away on another call. The next suggestion was for the robbers to head back to the village and wait for the bus to Kilkenny, it would be along in a couple hours
The teachers were now getting very suspicious of these two who were acting "very shifty" and they escorted them off the school grounds. Meanwhile, one of the post office staff who had gone out in her car to try and find these two spotted them coming out of the school and watched as they tried to dispose of the money, which they had been carrying in a shopping bag. Shortly after the two thieves were apprehended by the guards.
Saturday, Mam and I headed off to Thurles to see the parade as Mam's set dancing group were going to perform. However, it seems someone got the days mixed up. Thurles was having their parade on Sunday. But we had tea and scones in a pub, and did the weekly shop, so it wasn't a complete waste.
In fact, it was serendipitous for a couple reasons. The rain, which had held off until then, started as soon as we left the pub. And while we were shopping we found some lamb mince, which Mam used to make a lovely Shepherd's pie for supper.
Sunday dawned, cold and snowy and it kept snowing on an off all day. The weather was mad altogether. It would blizzard for 10 minutes, then the sun would come out blazing and melt everything, then it would snow again. You can see some of what we had to put up with here. Snow 18-03-2007 12-10-46.MPG The weather was so bad that some of the celebrations were cancelled along with loads of ferry sailings and a flight or two.
Nothing to do but light the fire and see what else the OC had to say about Paddy's day. Melissa put up some really good stuff Here, here, here, here, and here. Shes' been VERY busy. Kay Four, over on her blog, made a very sweet post.
Today has been much the same weather wise. More snow overnight so this was the view this morning.
We just had one or two brief flurries since, but it's bitterly cold and it's blowing a gale. The winds are going to get up to 120kph with lows of -2oC.
As I'm writing, Into the West is on the telly. If you want a good film set in Ireland I can highly recommend this
I tried to get a bit of variety this time, shooting from different angels and using a tripod.
2. I am a grown man, so why did I spend last night looking at this and thinking "Cool!"
3. I don't care what you think, this is damned impressive.
4. Did it have anything to do with the lack of blog activity? Where was everybody yesterday?
5. I love cats, but they can be vicious, bloodthirsty little monsters sometimes. One of ours slaughtered a bird the other day and left the remains in the hall. I felt like calling a Crime Scene Cleaner.
6. Saw my first Vista PC today in the local computer shop. Vista looks nice, but I'd really want to sit down with it for a while before I pass judgement.

Oh this Irish weather It all started yesterday. Walking by the kitchen window I noticed the birds were going mad for the feeder. "Odd," I thought, "what's got into them?"
Well I guess they knew something I didn't and were trying to stock up. Because the next time I looked out this was the view. If you look closely you can see the flakes coming down.
It kept snowing for the rest of the afternoon, and the temperature dropped sharply. The weather was all over the evening news, along with warnings not to travel as the roads were very bad.
I didn't need any more encouragement. I stoked up the fire and spent the evening at home, even though it meant missing my writer's group
The wind picked up later on and I though I heard rain, It must have been freezing rain, because we still had snow on the ground the next morning. It started coming down again too. This is ridiculous, was I going to be stuck at home again? The roads still looked treacherous. Then suddenly the sun came out and everything had melted by the time I had to leave.
The tempearture has dropped again tonight, but the skies are clear so I'm sure we're in for a heavy frost. It doesn't look like we'll have any more snow, but I think I'll leave the flakes here all the same.
On TodayFM, The Ray D'Arcy Show was celebrating Red Tinsel Day. Basically the idea is to go around wishing a "Merry Christmas" to the people that you meet during the day. Particularly the ones you might not normally talk to and those who will proabaly be working over Christmas - the clerk in the shop, the cop directing traffic, the person in the toll booth, the person in that call center.
I know it's a bit late but
to all my blog visitors.
And there's no law that says YOU can't celebrate Red Tinsel Day tomorrow.
Finally, another foggy morning, so another foggy photo.
