A Canadian in Ireland

Doesn't have the ring of "An American in Paris" (or even "An American at Opera") but what can you do?

I've been tagged

Twice by Louis and Marcus

So I'd better do this before I get hit again.

The Rules

Link to who tagged you
Post 5 jobs you would never do, with reasons why
Tag 5 people to do the same

So, my five jobs:

  1. Work in a call center - been there, done that. NEVER again.
  2. Any job where I'd have to deal with spiders - :yuck:
  3. Construction worker in Ireland - this is no climate to be working outside.
  4. Radioactive Mouse turd cleaner - not for the reason you think. It's so specialised I'd be afraid of putting someone else out of work :D
  5. Anything in sales - just doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

And now to tag some folks.

#3 - I don't think that you would really. Temperatures in single digits and rain coming down in sheets all day.

I know a brickie. He tells me they only stop in the worst weather, and when he doesn't work he doesn't get paid.

Apparently the job market for construction is much better too. The industry in Ireland is going through a downturn.

Hopefully, seems that developers went a bit mad and there's stories now of whole estates sitting empty because there are no buyers.

This is just an interesting observation of mine (whether right or wrong), but a lot of people are pointing to the whole 'sub-prime mortgage crisis' and a recession caused by it.

Now, I was watching DW TV the other day, and they were interviewing the head of a large German business (Mercedes) who said they weren't really feeling any recession - he just said (essentially) they focused on making sure they put out a quality product for their customers.

Isn't it interesting how a lot of other companies are trying to make sure their shareholders (as opposed to their customers) are happy, and they're the ones having trouble, whereas those (curiously  ) looking out for customers first are doing reasonably well ... ?

Link to (nearly) 4 minute YouTube video for the DW TV report I watched is here

Yeah, that's a big part of it. What the analysts here are saying is when the economy was doing well there were plenty of house buyers and banks were falling over themselves to offer people mortgages. With so much money about house prices went up until new buyers were finding themselves priced out of the market.

In the meantime property developers kept building new houses to fill a demand that just couldn't be sustained. Now the boom is starting to bust and the debate is just how hard the landing will be.

As for Mercedes, most automotive journalists feel Mercedes is in some trouble and it started when they began building cars down to a price. Quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction suffered. I think now though, Mercedes has realised how important the quality - or at least the perceived quality - of their cars is to their business.

Do you ever watch the show "Dirty Jobs"? It is amazing how many weird jobs are out there and how many jobs are there that most people wouldn't do or even have an inkling that such an opportunity exists!

This is a great show.

I think I've seen that one ... or, at least, something similar ... it was set in Brooklyn and followed people around cleaning up bits of people off the walls after they'd shot themselves (it was pretty graphic), or cleaning huge rats out of people's places ...

Thant's funny Elly, I was just watching Dirty Jobs last night.

Like the host says at the start
My name is Mike Rowe, and this is my job: I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty—hard-working men and women who earn an honest living doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us. Now... get ready, to get dirty.
