Sea- level rise

Bangladesh will have to bear the brunt of Nature's onslaught caused by the climatic changes which have been taking place because of global warming over the past few years. Unfortunately Bangladesh being situated in a disadvantageous topographical region ,more often than not she is exposed to various natural calamities like flood, cyclone, drought, earthquake etc.
Global warming has indeed a serious impact on ecology. The climatologists are of the opinion that the temperature of the world is going to rise by another 4'C in the mid 21st century causing havoc to life and property of the people lying in the lower areas along the sea shore.
Though the polar caps have been melting for quite a time , the rate of sea-level rise was recorded between 1 and 2 millimetres during the last century. But with the sharp increase in temperature due to green house effect, the pace of melting ice in the polar regions has also accelerated to a great extent.
The pundits have already made forecasts that if the water level in the sea goes on rising unabated, the lower southern part of Bangladesh is likely to be inundated.According to IPCC ( Internationaal Panel on Climate Change), even a single metre rise of sea-level is enough to submerge 15% to 20%of the total area of Bangladesh in the first instance. As a result, nearly 30 million people are going to be victims right away. What can be more alarming news for the people of Bangladesh than this one ?
