Christmas shopping
Sunday, December 23, 2007 1:17:23 AM
I'm not feeling very well right now, my throat hurts!
And I can't be sick, I have to work the following days!
I will have to drink a lot of milk with honey and garlic!
I was down-town today (Saturday), and for the first time in my life I enjoyed walking from one shop to another during three hours. I assume it's because I went out looking for things for myself, and found things that could fit people who are close to me as well!
I bought a perfect chopping board that is green and flexible with a handle at one end.
Another gift I bought was a sweater for Muñeco with matching 'leg'-warmers
Oh, and I found a really beautiful jacket from Peak performance that I'll try to buy in January. I've already had my Canada Goose between 4 and 5 years.
Oh, I was forgetting, there was a cool band today playing different instruments and I filmed a bit of their hard effort. What do you think?

I'll try your recipe Alla!
Qlue, I know about the milk producing phlegm...but it has helped me before!
Kimmie, actully it tastes quite okay...you know why? Because I put a lot of honey in the recipe so that it doesn't taste as containing garlic at all!

I guess all the milk Kertin drinks goes on her hips instead of the throat
Even if there were antibiotics in honey (for example) they could work if you were a bee but on an human, that is MUCH bigger and heavier, you probably need to eat 30Kg of honey at once for some real effect.
There are drugs you can buy in a pharmacy.
Since they are much more concentrated than natural remedies, they usually work. The most basic is Aspirin.

Here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirin
"often used as an analgesic (to relieve minor aches and pains), antipyretic (to reduce fever), and as an anti-inflammatory"
Aspirin has some collateral effects, expecially at high dosage or if you are allergic, so nowdays there are other drugs with the same effects.
To be precise, usually the sore throat comes from an infection. Unless you are weakened by some reasons, your body can manage it on its own in some days, like it does for the common cold. Aspirin doesn't "cure" the infection, just reduces the symtoms (inflammation, pain, fever) and make you feel better.
Infections come in 2 main types, the bacteric infections and the viral infections. The bacteric infections can be fought with "antibiotics" that kill the bacteria while the viral infections usually are not cured at all since you can't kill the viruses, unless they are life threating. In that case you need dangerous drugs that inhibit some process used by the viruses to replicate themselves via the body cells (see interferon).
About lemon, it is a weak acid and so it as some disinfectant property. But the point is lemon don't go INSIDE your body where the infection is. All you eat has to pass through your stomach before it can reach the blood and then the infected area.

In your throat there are 2 holes with a valve. One hole goes to your stomach and the other hole goes to your lungs. The valve is there in order to close shut the breathing hole when you are ingesting and vice-versa, otherwise you get the food stuck in the breathing tube and you cough and die if it dosn't get free immediately.

I've already said above about Aspirin having collateral effects. Paracetamol is better than Aspirin for fever but it is not effective against inflammations, see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracetamol:
"It is an effective substitute for aspirin, due to its analgesic and antipyretic properties. However, unlike aspirin, it is not a very effective anti-inflammatory agent."
On a side note, Aspirin as anti-coagulant is also used for some blood pressure conditions, to fluidify the blood and prevent infarction or even to cure it in emergency.

That said, if you read the collateral effect of Ibuprofen and Voltaren:
http://www.drugs.com/ibuprofen.html
http://www.drugs.com/voltaren.html
You see they aren't fresh water.
We were speaking of sore throat.
I can assure Aspirin works well for it.
Like EVERY other drug, you have to be careful, expecially when you are already taking other medicines and/or if you have got some medical issue. Never mix drugs either take drugs with alchool.
The good thing of Aspirin, given the above cautions, is that it works for a wide range of symptoms and simple disturbs, while other drugs are maybe more effective but over a smaller range. So for my few sick days I just have to have some Aspirin in the house, instead of a drawer of better drugs for the different occasions. I am lazy.
Anyway, I was only suggesting that the old plain Aspirin that has been around for 200 years now, works much better than milk with honey and garlic. I repeat, I am not a doctor. Simply asking the pharmacist he could give you better advices and options for the sore throat.
