I'm not feeling very well right now, my throat hurts! down And I can't be sick, I have to work the following days! sad I will have to drink a lot of milk with honey and garlic! chef

I was down-town today (Saturday), and for the first time in my life I enjoyed walking from one shop to another during three hours. I assume it's because I went out looking for things for myself, and found things that could fit people who are close to me as well! bigsmile I bought a perfect chopping board that is green and flexible with a handle at one end. smile Another gift I bought was a sweater for Muñeco with matching 'leg'-warmers smile Oh, and I found a really beautiful jacket from Peak performance that I'll try to buy in January. I've already had my Canada Goose between 4 and 5 years. party

Oh, I was forgetting, there was a cool band today playing different instruments and I filmed a bit of their hard effort. What do you think?

Get better soon worried Milk, honey and garlic sounds disgusting to me yuck bigsmile but must help up! I cure my sore throat eating lemon slices with sugar (one cut lemon and I feel ok, try it!) heart

Mad Scientistqlue Sunday, December 23, 2007 8:22:31 AM

Honey contains natural antibiotic properties (propolis) The acid in lemon helps to sooth sore throat and reduce inflamation. But milk is not helpfull as it promotes bacteria and phlegm.smile Hope you feel better soon.

Milk honey and garlic yuck

Mizz MartínezMizzMartinez Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:13:42 AM

Thanks my friends! smile I have to get better, I start to work within four hours! yikes faint The only problem right now is that I'm hoarse! awww down

I'll try your recipe Alla! up

Qlue, I know about the milk producing phlegm...but it has helped me before!

Kimmie, actully it tastes quite okay...you know why? Because I put a lot of honey in the recipe so that it doesn't taste as containing garlic at all! devil lol

Actually none of the above things work for the sore throat. All you eat goes right to the stomach where it is disassembled in its chemical components.
I guess all the milk Kertin drinks goes on her hips instead of the throat smile
Even if there were antibiotics in honey (for example) they could work if you were a bee but on an human, that is MUCH bigger and heavier, you probably need to eat 30Kg of honey at once for some real effect.

There are drugs you can buy in a pharmacy.
Since they are much more concentrated than natural remedies, they usually work. The most basic is Aspirin.

Mizz MartínezMizzMartinez Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:18:55 AM

Are you telling me that Aspirin works as a throat healer? yikes

Allangieallangie Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:20:57 AM

up bigsmile party

Allangieallangie Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:22:31 AM

I disagree, Lorenzo! Lemon helps my throat and I used to suffer from it a lot!

Mizz MartínezMizzMartinez Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:28:23 AM

I have to go out and by myself a lemon! awww

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:30:45 AM

Of course (it is strange you don't know it).

Here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirin
"often used as an analgesic (to relieve minor aches and pains), antipyretic (to reduce fever), and as an anti-inflammatory"

Aspirin has some collateral effects, expecially at high dosage or if you are allergic, so nowdays there are other drugs with the same effects.

To be precise, usually the sore throat comes from an infection. Unless you are weakened by some reasons, your body can manage it on its own in some days, like it does for the common cold. Aspirin doesn't "cure" the infection, just reduces the symtoms (inflammation, pain, fever) and make you feel better.

Infections come in 2 main types, the bacteric infections and the viral infections. The bacteric infections can be fought with "antibiotics" that kill the bacteria while the viral infections usually are not cured at all since you can't kill the viruses, unless they are life threating. In that case you need dangerous drugs that inhibit some process used by the viruses to replicate themselves via the body cells (see interferon).

About lemon, it is a weak acid and so it as some disinfectant property. But the point is lemon don't go INSIDE your body where the infection is. All you eat has to pass through your stomach before it can reach the blood and then the infected area.

When you ask a medical doctor you'll be told that herbal medicine doesn't work. Strange thing is, almost all modern medicine was originally derived from those same herbs that supposedly don't work. Besides, if you consult your anatomy text book you'll notice that honey must pass through your throat to reach your stomach. Ever wondered where the inspiration for cough mixture came from. happy

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Sunday, December 23, 2007 9:41:37 AM

Erbs do work. Doctors say they don't work because the problem is the quantity. To put together enough active substance from erbs you need to eat A LOT, lets say 50 kg. Or you have to refine the active substance like they do with common drugs. You could probably prepare some kind of drug yourself boiling 50Kg of some herbs but what is the point in doing it?

In your throat there are 2 holes with a valve. One hole goes to your stomach and the other hole goes to your lungs. The valve is there in order to close shut the breathing hole when you are ingesting and vice-versa, otherwise you get the food stuck in the breathing tube and you cough and die if it dosn't get free immediately.

Question: what do they teach in schools today?

Mad Scientistqlue Sunday, December 23, 2007 10:32:23 AM

I have an interesting article about honey on my blog. If you read it you might see a different view point. As for asprin . No decent doctor recommends the stuff. paracetamol is a lot safer. anyone who has any of the following medical conditions must not use asprin: HIV, gastric ulcer, any bleeding disorder, any heart defect, and of course any known allergy. .

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Sunday, December 23, 2007 11:52:44 AM

Well once upon a time people used any kind of natural remedies, some worked and some did actually worsen your condition. There are a lot of substances in honey, like there are a lot of substances even in milk, due to the fact both things are used to feeding babies. The only problem, like said above, is the quantity of those substances related to your body weight, exaclty for the same reason the insect killer kills the bee but does not kill you, besides the fact insects breath through holes in their exoscheleton but this is another story.

I've already said above about Aspirin having collateral effects. Paracetamol is better than Aspirin for fever but it is not effective against inflammations, see here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracetamol:
"It is an effective substitute for aspirin, due to its analgesic and antipyretic properties. However, unlike aspirin, it is not a very effective anti-inflammatory agent."

On a side note, Aspirin as anti-coagulant is also used for some blood pressure conditions, to fluidify the blood and prevent infarction or even to cure it in emergency.

Mad Scientistqlue Sunday, December 23, 2007 3:20:39 PM

Ever heard of Ibufrofen, Voltaren etc.? There are special conditions when Asprin is prescribed but not for common aches and pains etc. True, many people self medicate with the stuff but doctors only prescribe it on rare occasions for particular reasons.

Lorenzo CelsiLorenzoCelsi Sunday, December 23, 2007 3:52:39 PM

Not being a doctor myself I have to see one when I am really sick and the doctor (supposing doctors know what they do) gives me the better therapy.

That said, if you read the collateral effect of Ibuprofen and Voltaren:

http://www.drugs.com/ibuprofen.html

http://www.drugs.com/voltaren.html

You see they aren't fresh water.

We were speaking of sore throat.
I can assure Aspirin works well for it.

Like EVERY other drug, you have to be careful, expecially when you are already taking other medicines and/or if you have got some medical issue. Never mix drugs either take drugs with alchool.
The good thing of Aspirin, given the above cautions, is that it works for a wide range of symptoms and simple disturbs, while other drugs are maybe more effective but over a smaller range. So for my few sick days I just have to have some Aspirin in the house, instead of a drawer of better drugs for the different occasions. I am lazy.

Anyway, I was only suggesting that the old plain Aspirin that has been around for 200 years now, works much better than milk with honey and garlic. I repeat, I am not a doctor. Simply asking the pharmacist he could give you better advices and options for the sore throat.

Mad Scientistqlue Sunday, December 23, 2007 4:29:41 PM

A pharmacist makes a living peddling pharmaceuticals so obviously he'll choose drugs over medicine. Having said that though, pharmacist tend to be against the random use of asprin and usually advise paracetamol. Anyways this discussion is starting to go in circles. I think everyone is quite certain where we each stand o there issues. smile
