A sort-of solution Moesring thought of regarding unwanted "friends".

Whilst Moesring was away, he thought on the subject of unwanted "friends". If you haven't guessed, Moesring got a few more unsolicited friend requests from total strangers during his absence. :furious:

Moesring decided the best solution is to remove the "Add Moesring as a friend" links completely - so that's what he did. :happy: It might sound a bit harsh, but preventing people from clicking the button allows Moesring greater control. Believe it or not, Moesring doesn't enjoy being added by random people. It seems somewhat needy and hollow to Moesring. The situation is better than it used to be, but being told by email that a random person Moesring hasn't heard of wants to be his friend is still bothersome. :bomb:

If someone really wants to add Moesring first, pursuant to a genuine friendship, they can be given the link by PM when they ask for it. This allows Moesring the opportunity to decide for himself if he wants to give the link to this person. Alternatively, they could wait until Moesring adds them first - and then they simply click the "Add Moesring back" button. The second way would allow them much needed time to come to their senses and realise how silly it would be to have Moesring as a friend. P:

:sst: Moesring already knows of two loopholes that break this solution. You might be able to guess what it is by pondering this post as a whole. Even so, Moesring feels those that can break the solution to be the minority - and if this prevents one person from randomly adding Moesring then it was worthwhile. :yes:

How did you do that?!

Moesring 23. August 2009, 11:55

I battled with my conscience but, in the end, I decided to tell everyone how it was done. Although it would perhaps do more good if it were publicly known, my initial reaction was to keep it private - lest anyone figure out the problems with it. This way, I will make the solution known but keep the flaws private. If others realise the flaws for themselves, that is great - and hopefully they will also keep schtum to allow this solution to remain partially-useful. :up:

In a nutshell, I am using CSS to hide the link (hence the CSS tag on this post). The link still exists but it is no longer visible to the user... and so cannot be clicked. :happy:
In fact, this is the CSS (obviously, you would want to change the username if you were to copy it).
#content .buttons a[href="/Moesring/addfriend.pl"] {
display:none;
}

Interesting. I actually enjoy seeing new friend requests these days. The way the new system works it's unobtrusive so I can get to see why they added me (interesting new post all the way down to desperate newbie trying to gain a foothold with the seemingly popular kids) and calculate odds of them ever showing up again.

It's pretty clever to hide the button if it bothers to have people adding you out of the blue. :yes:

How can you tell why people add you Mik?

MizzMartinez 23. August 2009, 15:24

The action (removing the Add as friend-link) itself is not bad. But the title is quite harsh! p:

Odds based on the person's situation here and my own post status. Did I mention I have no life so plenty of time to investigate these things? :cry:

I let my friends requests build and build...they get bored with opera once they realise it's 60% vietnamese, the photo section is mainly boobs and bums off the net, and the blogging ranges from in need of help to getting help..

Hello, legendary blogger here. :mad: Stand in the corner until you're ready to play nice.
