A day without cats? Who thought up this silly idea?

Moesring could have found out about this abomination earlier, if only he had listened to his foot.

It turns out that today is the so-called "Day Without Cats".
Amazingly, Moesring didn't hear of this event through the Lord of Furtopia, whom Moesring would have expected to have a vested interest in proliferating this event.

Moesring actually heard about it through I Can Has Cheezburger? and their actions against this silly idea. As ICHC (I Can Has Cheezburger?) puts it...

Several rogue websites have declared today, September 9, as a Day Without Cats. In typical cat fashion, we will ignore this ridiculous notion and simply be posting the Best of Cheezburger videos throughout the whole day. Caturday 4ever.

Actually, today isn't just about silly people wanting to be rid of cats for some unfathomable reason. It is also National 999 Day, Republic Day in North Korea and Independence Day in Tajikistan. amongst others. You'd think the silly anti-cat people would have chosen a date when there weren't other, more important, things on as well.

999 is the emergency services' number here (the equivalent of 112 in Sweden). The purpose of the day is to reiterate the usual message is "Don't ring the number unless it is a genuine emergency. For example, don't be as silly as the man that rang the number because he had left his jacket on the seat of a bus, or the woman who rang 999 because she had run out of credit for her mobile.

112 Is also the emergency default number on gsm cellular phones.

Our landline emergency number is 999 although it has been superceded by another number. (can't recall what it is since I haven't had a landline for years

Actually phones tend to have the default number set according to the country. For example, here we can type 999 or 112 with the keypad locked. Hmmm, wonder how touchscreens manage that as you have to hold a key to unlock the screen then hit the dialler section to call someone.
