Reflections of a Chronic Malcontent

See-Through Man

Do you remember
how I said I would
love you until forever
like no angel could?
Can you still see me
in your sweetest dreams,
holding on to Heaven
while the Devil screams?

I've got no hope
I've got no promise now
I'm holding empty memories
but I'll survive somehow.

I've go no reason;
just betrayed, abandoned dreams
I'm sleeping with a ghost
each night
and now it seems
I'm soon to be one,
just a vacant, see-through man,
loving what was never;
but you can't understand
your heart betrayed us,
your lies ate years of trust.
And you'll move on
to blame again
as the soulless must.

Brokenhearted Doll

“The world weighs on my shoulders
But what am I to do
You sometimes drive me crazy
But I worry about you.”

Rush. ‘Distant Early Warning’ from Moving Pictures.

Have a dance or take a pill
Pursue a question no others will
Eat a peach one summer’s eve
Watch the way old lovers grieve

Dance with a brokenhearted doll
Promise half but give it all
Give whatever you ain’t got
Say it is when you know its not

Run toward the Promised Land
Take a stroll on virgin sand
Dream a dream from your lover’s head
Take your meaning from her bed

Paint the sky with your last name
Watch the sky return to same
Tell the maker he got it wrong
And rewrite life all night long.

Candleflame

There's more truth in a candle flame
than all books ever written.
There's more love in an innocent tear
than in every promise made.
There's more certainty in a sigh
more hope in a dream
There's more doubt in belief
more hate in grief.
There's more freedom in obedience
than in blazing a wellworn trail
There's more to misery than Hell.
There's more need in a kiss
than in every earthly plan.
There's more to bliss
than I can understand.
There's more trust in a touch
more permanence in a smile
There's more God inside than out
more emptiness with than without.

Goodfirst

A pathetic sort of fellow:
one whose thoughts burn white.
A madman and a parson,
both in constant flight.
Ah, but when his dreams
catch up with him,
and bleed his black heart dry,
both will turn and cut each throat ...
the parson's first to die.

Broken Man

If I became a broken man
would you still be my bride?
If I could no longer pick you
sunshine from the sky
Would you push me aside?

If I struggle to stand or cry to crawl
would you stand for me and be my all?
Or would you give my love to a total man
hoping I and others would understand?

Am I still the man,
though half the strength,
I was when I chased you the length
of a hopeful heart in a ga-ga girl ...
when your loving smile pierced my world?

If a promise made is etched on God
and I falter on the way,
Will I see your hand reach for me
as I held you today?

Different Colors

I wanna toss popcorn at you during the movie
- talk dirty to me in your best Scarlett voice -
I wanna melt your panties off during intermission.
Tell me we have a choice,
between simply enduring and really living.

Tell me misery can mean something.
Tell me the search is over.
Tell me my Dance with the Devil is almost complete...
Swear it all and say something sweet.

I wanna pray beside you in a cathredral
and swipe the candle for our bed
I wanna paint your toenails different colors
I'd rather be laughing with the living than
searching among the dead.

Call me your lifetime lover,
Show me dreams come true
Tell me you feel a million songs
when I am kissing you.

Captives

I've been consumed
with thoughts
all this day
Of you, me, and
the way.
I reach across years
to touch your
smile
because I see in you
pleasant love,
All the while
knowing we two
could be one -
captives of the Father
and the Son.

Woman Hater. Part VI: Break

,

Break this heart
Do your best to kill the rest
I hate you
I hate you

Break this man
Take the time to draw the line
Drown the dream
Drown the dream

Break the bond
Play the game and place the blame
You lie well
You lie well

Break your soul
Live a life of constant strife
You've lost now
You've lost now

That Love

That love which cannot surmount
isn't love and lives without
the single flower in snowswept fields
that leads us to eternal yields.

That love which cannot abide
the fears of life which we both hide
Isn't love and lives without
the peace that comes when we surmount.

I would die for one chance to see
me in you and you in me.
I would bleed sweet years for more
than what we've both dismissed before.

That love which cannot renew
the dream I have inside of you
Isn't love and cries to see
what becomes of you and me.

Whisper

Dare one hope for
sunshine
in a sweet voice?
Soft dreams
here forever?
Is love a chore
or a choice?
taken now
or taken never?

I see you
from a distance,
and stand
alone
supremely free.
I find a man
I never knew
whisper
Sweet Lord, let this be.
