Last year, after two years trying and failing to improve the basic Opera engine (64-bit, graphics hardware acceleration), Opera released a disappointing update from O11 to O12. This all took place soon after one of the founders, Jon von Teztchner, left stating Opera was heading the wrong way.
They dropped Widgets and Unite - two very innovative things at the time they were added - without warning and without an alternative for users.
They downsized suddenly.
They announced an exciting new innovation which turned out to be some lame iPad thing for linking all your Facebook and Twitter crap.
Then... they killed Opera.
Opera 12 is the last real Opera based on their own code and with thousands of special little features built in to make internetting faster, easier and configurable. The version after it, first O13 & 14 on mobile, then O15 for the desktop, is just a stripped out and buggy version of Chrome! It has literally NOTHING good compared to any other browser. Since its release in April, it has gone up to version 19 and STILL DOESN'T EVEN HAVE PROPER BOOKMARKS!!!
I won't even bother trying it since 1) they threw away the mail client which I'm still using O12 for and 2) I read the users comments for each new release and it still has literally nothing working in it which would make it better than anything else.
Then today I read that they're also killing MyOpera.
So that's it then folks... Opera (the company) has totally lost the plot and we'll all be kicked out of here in March.
I will be looking for a different browser and mailer, and I expect Opera to disappear in a couple more years. Having been a loyal user for more than fifteen years, and even a bit of a fanboy in the beginning, it's really quite sad to see this happen. I'm just glad that Fastmail bought themselves back so with any luck my OperaMail mail address will continue to exist.
