Oslo, travel
My first day in Oslo turned out to be the day when I experienced snow-flakes for the first time. They were white & light....no weight at all. I was sipping hot coffee along with a slice of pizza on a quiet hillock in the centre of the city, surrounded by buildings with some billboards flashing on them. Behind me was something that looked like a cool building....it turned out to be a palace. I am yet to figure out of someone stays at the palace or not, there were guards marching around the place completely dressed in Norwegian outfits.
All this happened while I was waiting for my hotel room to be cleaned and handed over to me. I had reached earlier then the check-in time and had to wait in their TV room. While there was the internet that kept me busy, the low battery on my laptop didn’t help much. So i had to venture out, figure out an adopter for my charger. The nice lady at the reception drew a map to reach the shop where I could buy one. I thought since am out – i might as well take a longer stroll around my hotel.
There is a beautiful park right next to my hotel, surrounded by trees which are laden with yellow flowers and brick-red leaves. The green grass had neat pathways passing through them. I took one which went right across the park -passing the palace -and reaching the other side of the park – which was the hillock I had my lunch.
After i checked-in and freshened up I walked on the other side of the hotel in the evening, this lane was filled with stores with fashionable outfits, restaurants and corner stores like the 7/11.
It was amazing to watch people walking on the streets, everyone was wearing thick jackets and women wearing high-boots. Interesting to note that I came across several women moving around with prams on the road – the cold weather makes me wonder if it is safe to take small kids out during such times. But I guess they are used to such temperatures and live with it. I walked quite a bit, also trying to figure out the station from where i was going to take the tram to office the next day.
Before landing in Oslo, I had prepared to be in some extremely cold climate and was wondering if I will be able to enjoy it. Thankfully all my doubts have been put to rest after my 1st day in Oslo – I can do it. All this while the temperature widget on my laptop showed that the temperature in Oslo is either 1 or 0 degrees. Cool na .....
New things I came across:
- e-tickets, checking-in online we all know ..... while boarding the Oslo flight form Amsterdam, the guy ahead of me had his boarding pass on this phone, the lady put his phone screen under the reader and he was in. I was impressed to see technology helping us get paper-less
- Room heaters we've seen.... but my bathroom has a temperature control system too, that keeps the floor warm
- On TV - here too I saw programs from Disney Channel & Star World...with Norwegian subtitles of-course. The names of TV channels is very convenient – they are called NK1, NK2, SVT1, SVT2, 1 and 2 amongst others
