I know what you did this summer …

While the monsoon is steadily spreading its wings across the country, I felt like looking back and checking-out what Indians have been up to on the mobile Web this summer.A sneak peek into Opera's State of the Mobile Web (SMW) reports from the past few months seemed a good way to begin.
Here are some of the interesting discoveries I unearthed:
1] Talking about the 'most visited domains’ - the usual threesome, i.e.,
Google, Orkut & Facebook continued to dominate the top 3 slots. A revelation was YouTube slowly tiptoeing into the Top 5 list. It has been cruising on the prevalent 2G speeds in India and is gaining popularity on mobiles too. And the IPL frenzy fueled by the combined marketing campaigns by IPL/YouTube/telecom operators/etc. couldn't have hurt.
2] With cricket fever gripping the entire nation, I am not surprised to see a number of sports related websites in the top 100 list. Check out this group from the list:
m.cricinfo.com
cricket.yahoo.com
www.cricbuzz.com
cricket.rediff.com
imsports.rediff.com
m.cricketnext.com
sports.opera.com
You may wonder why www.iplt20.com is not on this list. I’m wondering the same. But then I also see lots of visitors to nokia.com. Maybe apps were preferred for this particular site. What do you think?
3] We continue to be download fanatics, even on mobile phones, with sites such as wap.in, songs.pk and zedge.net making their presence felt month after month.
4] The sites indianrail.gov.in, irctc.co.in and trainenquiry.com are in the top 100. Holiday travel time ... do I need to say more? And another thing: indianrail.gov.in was at-least 40 places higher in the list than irctc.co.in. So it is clear that, if not bookings, a lot of PNR & train enquiries happened over the mobile Web.
5] The most frequently-asked question of the month was clearly "So how much did you score?". Many people rushed to exam-results-related websites. Check-out the list for yourself:
cbseresults.nic.in/ www.cbse.nic.in
www.indiaresults.com
aieee.nic.in
upresults.nic.in
www.winentrance.com
www.examresults.net
results.gov.in
www.ignou.ac.in
www.indiastudychannel.com
results.nic.in
www.bseb.edu.in
mahresult.nic.in
tnresults.nic.in
Phew! Given that kind of coverage, while some students must have taken advantage of accessing results on their mobile phones as soon as results came out, those who wished to avoid their results stood no chance of staying away from them!
