QR Codes and Microsoft Tags

Microsoft's trying to re-invent the mobile phone barcoding wheel by releasing "Microsoft tags". Unlike QR Codes these new tags are not self-contained, and require an internet connection to be useful. Basically, each colourful tag represents only a serial number, and your phone needs to connect to Microsoft's server to find out what that serial number links to.
QR Codes, on the other hand, contain the information within their mosaic depths. If someone hands you a business card while you're down a mineshaft somewhere, you can still read what's contained in the code and get on with digging yourself out.
I go into more detail here if you'd like to know more about it.
