It Was Dennis Hopper's Turn This Time

,

Dennis Hopper, whose portrayals of drug-addled, often deranged misfits in the landmark films "Easy Rider", "Apocalypse Now" and "Blue Velvet" drew on his early out-of-control experiences as part of a new generation of Hollywood rebel, died at his home in Venice, California today. He was 74 years old. According to the Times obituary written by Edward Wyatt, Mr. Hopper died from complications of prostate cancer. rip

Although I thought the movie was pretty cheesy, I really liked Dennis Hopper's character in "Speed". As a matter of fact, when I'd read that Mr. Hopper had died, I told my son and his first reaction was, "Wasn't he the crazy bomber guy from Speed?" Of course, I loved him in Easy Rider as well...who couldn't? But then, how could anyone not have liked him in any of his roles? smile

Dang sad

What a career - he worked with James Dean, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Paul Newman.

KarenNerak Saturday, May 29, 2010 9:13:51 PM

Yes, he really did have quite a career. From what I've always understood, he was a very nice person behind the scenes, too. sad

At least he's in a much better place now. Prostate Cancer isn't something I'd wish on anyone. The pain of it must've been unbearable at times. So yeah...I'm at least happy that he's no longer having to deal with those sorts of things anymore. smile

cry Another one down sad

KarenNerak Saturday, May 29, 2010 9:53:40 PM

Yep. sad Famous people are really kickin' off lately. It's weird how it seems to happen in phases or something. I know that everyone says deaths happen in threes, but this is far beyond three. bigeyes

Threes or multiples of, Karen. rip , Dennis. cheers

L2D2 Saturday, May 29, 2010 11:44:48 PM

I liked Dennis. He played some of the most unique, and demanding roles in Hollywood. He had a knack of taking a character and making it believable---usually hateable. He nearly always played the villain. I've been seeing him around most of my adult life, and he wasn't really widely know till this last half of his career.

I hope he's in a good place now. No cancer is bearable; nor should anyone have to suffer from this disease. Pray for the cure.

Someone is going to have to take away the fly swatters

L2D2 Sunday, May 30, 2010 5:57:20 AM

I heard it here first, too, since I don't watch TV anymore. We really have lost a number of iconic celebrities in the past couple years----and a lot of them to cancer, like Patrick Swayze.

KarenNerak Sunday, May 30, 2010 6:07:25 AM

Indeed, we have. Cancer is such a horrible disease. sad

Dacotah Sunday, May 30, 2010 12:44:46 PM

Micheal Landon died from it too. sad

KarenNerak Sunday, May 30, 2010 1:53:57 PM

Oh, that's right. sad So many wonderful people have lost the battle. But then, lots of wonderful people have also beaten it pretty darn well, too. up

KYrenKYren Sunday, May 30, 2010 3:01:43 PM

Oh I remembered, I have seen him in Speed. Good actor. up

H82typ Sunday, May 30, 2010 3:24:42 PM

Hi, y'all! Gary Coleman, too. rip right Ok, he wasn't in Dennis' league, still... He was only 42.

Dacotah Sunday, May 30, 2010 10:00:03 PM

Yep, Gary had a seizure and fell and hit his head causing head injuries.

KarenNerak Monday, May 31, 2010 6:21:05 AM

Yeah...him, too. down I don't even want to ask who's next. I mean, Dennis Hopper?! cry Not that his life was more meaningful or was somehow worth more than others. I just really liked him a lot. He was a really talented guy.

This is kinda related but not at all close to the topic. Huh? Whatever. When I worked in Roanoke, VA they were filming a movie on the street where I worked. Think it was called 'Crazy People'. Anyway, came busting out the door heading for lunch and pretty much ran right over Dudley Moore right in the middle of filming a scene. I never knew a director yelling "CUT!" could scare you so much. Oops?

Magnus ThanatosErbsdaword Monday, May 31, 2010 9:09:42 PM

He will be missed. i enjoyed his films...

KarenNerak Tuesday, June 1, 2010 12:47:51 AM

L2D2 Tuesday, June 1, 2010 6:32:20 AM

I was so surprised when I found out how tall he was. Didn't he die too?

KarenNerak Wednesday, June 2, 2010 1:10:06 AM

Yes, siree. down I absolutely LOVED him in Arthur! That's one of my all time favorite movies. My parents and I used to always watch it together when I was a little kid. bigsmile

Uncle MickMickeyjoe-Irl Monday, June 7, 2010 3:25:06 PM

I saw Easy Rider for the first time last night on telly. I wasn't that mad about the story, but Hopper gave a great performance along with Fonda and Nicholson.
