That's just the fiery pits of hell that he was bound to end up in sooner or later. You see, despite having made a career of jumping up and down on furry animals in a mushroom fueled rage, nobody saw what a villain he was because they didn't read the manuals.

In Mario's first adventure we see him trying to rescue his girlfriend from a giant monkey who has kidnapped her. Nobody knew why Donkey Kong had done such a thing and assumed this giant monkey had shown up King Kong style to do so. The truth is revealed in the manual for the home edition where it is explained that Mario had been abusing his pet ape and that the ape had kidnapped his girlfriend as revenge.

We know that Mario went on to find fame by "rescuing" (kidnapping perhaps?) princesses, but what of Donkey Kong? Dead. Mario murdered him. Don't believe me? Just ask Rare who went on with the Donkey Kong series as they've made sure to let everyone know that their character is the son of the original Donkey Kong and not the original.

So yeah, hell awaits for Mario and that cover is all the proof you need.
