Happy 20th Anniversary to Super Nintendo!

, , ,

Can you even believe it's been 20 years since the launch of Super Nintendo?! bigeyes I mean, it's been 20 long years since the first appearance of Yoshi! Just doesn't feel like it's been two decades.

August of 1991...wow. I was 17 years old & my son was still in the womb at that time. He's now a full-grown man, getting ready to enter his 20's. left Holy shiz, I'm old.

When the SNES was first released, it retailed for $200. Back then, that was outrageous! lol Not a whole lot of parents were willing to pay that price for a gaming system for their kids. Needless to say, there were a lot of pissed off kids. As a matter of fact, the first time I even played an SNES was the day I bought it. I was the first of my friends to have one...and no, I did not share. p I was too busy playing it, myself, to hand the controller over to anyone else.

The first game I played on the SNES was The Legend of Zelda...of course. yes I clearly recall the first time I beat the game. I was staying with my Mom in her house. I had my SNES in my bedroom and spent hour upon hour beating the piss out of boss after boss. The final boss came around and after a few failed attempts, I finally slaughtered his ass! headbang I proceeded to jump around while hooting and hollering. My Mom came running down the hall while exclaiming, "What happened?! Are you okay?!" She apparently thought I'd hurt myself or something. lol I screeched, "I beat it! I BEAT IT!!" When she finally realized what I was saying, she gave me a look that said, "You have GOT to be kidding me. Get a grip, Karen." I don't think I'll ever forget that day. bigsmile

So anyway, Happy Anniversary to Super Nintendo! party
Thank you for bringing me countless hours of happiness.
I heart you ever so much! o

Congratulations, Jenn!Game On 2.0

One of the greatest memories of my life was wondering why I was receiving my 8th birthday present a day late and screaming to the top of my lungs when I pulled the wrapping paper off the box to discover that it was an SNES. Much of my childhood memories center around this console.

It was $200 because it was far technologically superior to most things sold to consumers of the day, including most personal computers.

BulbasaurJetPackBulbasaur Tuesday, August 23, 2011 6:50:33 PM

Does the GBA version of that game do it justice? Looks alot like Minish Cap.

KarenNerak Tuesday, August 23, 2011 6:50:51 PM

lol I actually thought about that! "It's a day after Dustin's birthday...that's killer!" headbang

It was worth more than 200 bones in my eyes. o

I've honestly never played it on the GBA. I'm old & the screen is too small. lol

It's the best Zelda game to date. Minish cap doesn't do it justice, and I doubt the GBA port's nearly as good as the original. You'd be better off getting it on the VC on the Wii or emulating it on your computer.

I'd pay $200 for one today.

Of course Super Mario World was my first SNES game. I can remember not being able to beat the 3rd castle for years. Funny considering SMW's probably the easiest Mario game ever released.

I can remember spending days upon days of my life playing A Link to the Past. My friend Chris and I would play the game for hours. Quite possibly one of the greatest games ever created.

Well, unlike all of you, I had to play Nintendo games on cheap Chinese knockoffs (which weren't so cheap in Russia, anyway) - somehow official Nintendo stuff never reached post-USSR Russia until very recently. Not that it wasn't a precious experience. Just saying.

KarenNerak Tuesday, August 23, 2011 7:58:28 PM

That blows all sorts of ass! down

It's confused me a little bit. In the intro, it says it's made by.. Capcom? What's with that?

I've spent the last of my Wii points on Cave Story, so I'll need to give this a pass for now. I'm more into the cartoony Zelda's anyway. Especially Wind Waker!

If I recall right capcom helped with the making of the game

Back in the days when Nintendo was king bigsmile I remember the day it came out well. I was -5 years old heart Happier times...

KarenNerak Wednesday, August 24, 2011 12:26:38 AM

When I was five years old, we had to play with rocks, sticks, and mud to entertain ourselves.

MConor Wednesday, August 24, 2011 12:36:38 AM

doh I can always count on you to get a joke, can't I Mom? p

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, August 24, 2011 1:58:27 AM

Good old SNES. This is still THE console, the one that had all of America calling gaming "playing Nintendo" for three entire console generations (five on television programmes, even if they had the console and controller on the screen - I'm looking at you Will Smith as you blatantly play Alex Kidd on a Megadrive/Genesis in America and call it playing Nintendo...). No other console has been as synonymous with gaming since.

The Xbox 360 was pretty much the go to console for most of 2000. It made the PS2 look like playing with rocks and sticks.

But yes, nothing was ever as legendary as Nintendo in it's hayday bigsmile Though, doesn't stop Sony/Microsoft from making tonnes more cash... p

KarenNerak Wednesday, August 24, 2011 4:52:55 AM

Nintendo is superior to those other ninnies.

'Cept Microsoft, of course. p

Bleh, the only thing the XBox has which I want is the "Arcade Shop" thing. It has some old fighters I never got the chance to play like Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. Other than that, it's mostly just shooter' crap.

The Playstation has Ratchet and Clank and Little Big Planet.

Nintendo has.. Pretty much everything else. beard

MConor Wednesday, August 24, 2011 10:37:59 AM

I don't really play exclusives... or shooters... or fight games... or platform games... or anything, really just CRPG's and Simulations bigsmile I'm a dork, yes.

rachel shittyrachel Wednesday, August 24, 2011 1:54:15 PM

Just suddenly reminds me of my gameboy and GBA, I used to play pokemon on the class(of course when it was really noting to learn!) and the boy sat beside me played the king of fighters... Haha. bigsmile

You're thinking of the original. The 360 has the best RPG collection of this generation which is why I bought it. Love my RPGs. wizard

yes Apart from Fable 2+3... awww Butchery

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, August 24, 2011 4:00:12 PM

Fable II was awesome with minor problems, the main one being that people expected more of the same as Fable. I could debate that one until the cows come home and have hundreds of lines of text, maybe thousands, saying how I think it could have been improved, but it's one of my favourite games that I keep going back to for hundreds of hours of fun.

Fable III was set to be twice the game and then the game got changed a few weeks before release again, and the company testing it (and Fallout: New Vegas) botched their tests and let a load of bugs through (for both games which screwed the end of last year for most people). You should have seen Fable III before they had to change it to "better fit the vision of those in charge" though. Followers mattered in the endgame not for levelling up, as you'd be setting up your defences for each region using them, perhaps sacrificing one region for another. The revolution itself had more to it in terms of sidequests and you actually fought your way up to the castle all the way including a massive melee in the garden. It's still an eight out of ten game, but it could have been so much more if management had fucked off and stayed fucked off.

MConor Wednesday, August 24, 2011 4:36:21 PM

I liked the last part of Fable 3. It was fun.

Yes, Capcom developed Minish Cap.

Thinking of the original Xbox? There hasn't been a decent RPG released here since 2006 when Final Fantasy 12 and Suikoden V were released (and both were on the PlayStation 2 exclusively), and most "RPG" games released today are multiplatform. Today RPG games are "action RPG" games which means they're button masher grind games with little story to speak of and are catered to the ignorant modern gamer, the ones who do the same thing when they pretend to be murderers, elite soldiers, or zombie apocalypse survivors in FPS games. True action RPG? The Seiken Densetsu series (Secret of Mana). The majority of the remaining ones today are Zelda-like games with RPG elements duct taped on. There's probably some gems amongst the cruft (and there definitely is if you count the Japanese ones that won't ever be released here), but the RPG genre died a long time ago.

That's why the SNES was great. RPG games were RPG games, and the greatest ones ever made were produced for that console.

bigeyes So, you're saying Arena/Daggerfall/Morrowind were not the best RPG's ever made? No offense, but are you high? p

BulbasaurJetPackBulbasaur Wednesday, August 24, 2011 6:08:28 PM

I'm afraid Pokemon is still the king, Queen and God of RPG's. It's what, the second most profitable franchise of all time?

MConor Wednesday, August 24, 2011 6:12:27 PM

RPG = Roleplaying Game.
Pokemon = Action/Adventure Game

Action/Adventure =/= RPG

BulbasaurJetPackBulbasaur Wednesday, August 24, 2011 6:34:02 PM

Pokemon is definitely a turn based RPG game. An action adventure game is something like Kingdom Hearts.

MConor Wednesday, August 24, 2011 6:37:04 PM

What kind of roleplaying is there? There's no choices to make (besides which pokemon to use and male or female) and no statistics to base your character on.

BulbasaurJetPackBulbasaur Wednesday, August 24, 2011 6:45:17 PM

Rather than go into a rant, I'll just post a few links.

IGN ~ http://uk.ds.ign.com/objects/059/059687.html

Gamespot ~ http://uk.gamespot.com/ds/rpg/pokemon-white/index.html

Some random website ~ http://www.bigw.com.au/entertainment/video-games-consoles/games/bpnBIGW_0000000268296/nintendo-ds-pokemon-white

Feel free too look elsewhere, but every-single credible site on the internet will class Pokemon as Role Play as the genre.

MConor Wednesday, August 24, 2011 6:47:41 PM

Okay bigsmile Not the kind of RPG I'd play, but the internet is God wink
