Prem

, ,

Whenever there is a sunny Saturday afternoon, I just can't stay inside the house - I must go out - no matter where, just out! Today I visited a nearby village of Prem. (click below to continue)

Prem is situated in the west-south of Slovenia and it is best known for it's old castle and Dragotin Kette, a genious Slovenian poet, who sadly died too young (aged 23, in 1899) to achive the greatness he was born to. His classical sonnets are so skillfully written that one gets an impression like the rigid form (which many poets struggle with) is the most natural thing for verses to be written in. But I admire him for an other reason; no matter how hard his life was, he kept thinking positively, which is a rare thing among romantic and neo-romantic poets. Optimism was in short supply among most of them.

Well; If you look above, you'll see a silhouette of the village, which is acutally located between the two peaks of a smaller hill. On one peak there is the curch, on the other, the Castle.

Just before I left, a gentleman came to me and said:"I see you're a photographer. You gotta see this!" He took me into his barn and showed me a little Bambi Roe Deer he is fostering. The poor thing probably lost it's mother in a car accident and it is now unable to live on it's own. This kind of nurture is actually quite common in Brkini region. The way I understand it; after a wounded or orphaned animal is found, they keep it in barn untill it is old or healthy enough to live outside. Later on they gradually exapand it's living territory and at the end, they set it free. A very noble thing, indeed.

The portrait of Dragottin Kette is by Ivan Vavpotič.

I'd be interested to read one of Dragotin's poems. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any on the web - and they probably haven't been translated into English. Nice photos.

Susthama - your comment makes me think. I must check it out, but I think there might be something in English.

Interestingly, 'Prem' means 'Love' in Hindi.
