Small Mammals - Feeding Stations

, , , , ,

At this time of year it will no doubt be a tough on small mammals such as Shrews, Voles, Wood Mice E.T.C.
Many insects on which they feed will have gone into hibonation or will be hiding away elsewhere.
Many crops and plants E.T.C will have died or be leafless and so many of these tiny creatures will be struggling, with winter on the way and snow a threat, many of these mammals will die.
For a Common Shrew, they need to eat 80-90 per cent of their own body weight in food daily just to survive, a life spent wizzing around searching desperatly for food, while living with the fear that a Cat may be on the prowl...

So, here is the part that we can do to help these amazing creatures.
A Bird table or even a tray on the ground, undercover, can provide the ideal feeding station for these mammals. Bearing in mind that the feeding station wont be a hazard and that the Cats wont be-able to reach the small mammals.
The feeding station should be in an area in which no air-bord predators such as owls can't hunt down them. Also make sure the construction is safely tied to a tree or something to prevent cats tipping it over, a tray just placed on the ground may be a CAT -astrophe, as Cats will reach the mammals and it may also attract Rats, my ideal structure would be the top of a bird table on the ground with small chicken wire all the way round, placed on the ground, some mammals may did underneath this.

The food to give them is bird seeds, cheese, peas, non-salted peanuts.
More later.
