Download folder in your sidebar:

, , , ,

When I am not programming, I am usually surfing the web, and when I surf the web nothing irritates me as much as if I have to open up some other app, or alt-tab to carry out some random task. One thing you can do to avoid this a few times every day is to have your download folder inside Opera.

One neat function in Opera is the ability to browse folders on your hard drive. If you don't know how to do this already, just open up a new tab, and write C: or what ever drive letter you want to start browse.

If you now write the full path to your download folder, or browse your way there, you can now add a bookmark to this folder for easier access. But why stop there. If you now drag the bookmark to your panel, you can open up your download folder in your panel no matter what page you are currently browsing.

It might not be as feature rich as explorer in Windows or what other shell you are using. But you can easily preview images, or start installations without having to leave Opera for one second.

If you would rather have your download folder in it's own tab, then just drag the bookmark to your toolbar instead. Clicking it should open it up in a new tab for your convenience at all times.

I do my managing in the Ctrl+Alt+T

The Transfers panel has more options regarding files: copy/paste/delete, and the rest of the items in the system context menu. You can always open images, installers..

Sure you can look in the transfer panel. But it is not your download folder. It doesn't list all files downloaded from other apps ie. if you are using two different browsers, msn, or a separate download manager.

It might just be a feeling, but if I have 200 lines in the transfer panel, it seems to get more to work on and become less responsive. So I usually clean up the transfer panel every now and then. At least more often than my download folder.

I see. I move files to their proper place some time after transfer, so I don't have that problem.

You are welcome to do some cleaning in both my download folder as well as my room at any time p

I need a new hard drive and do a real clean up of my whole system and get Linux installed again. Until then things just seem to pile up.

It's an interesting suggestion, but as was mentioned previously, I don't have one "catch all" folder for all my downloads. They can go to the Desktop, or to various folders on my D: drive... smile

And no, I won't clean out your download folder. p

Hello!
Such a good suggestion smile but my beloved download folder is in my own drive...whatever, up to my state that time...

@ghmedi:
It's not really my field, but last time a friend of mine had a virus, we looked the name up on http://www.symantec.com and we found instructions there on how to deal with it. So it might be worth a shot.
