http://metavid.ucsc.edu/wiki_dev/mv_embed/sample_page.php doesn't render in my Opera, crashes Safari beta on play, crashes IE6 some time after successful play ... Any idea why ?

I would guess either your Java install (do you have the newest version)? Or you have some plug-in installed that is not supported but tried used anyway, or a plug-in that is not updated. I can't test it on Safari on my machine, since Safari won't even start, and I have IE7 installed, not IE6, so not sure if it is even ment to work in IE6, sorry.
