Spectrobes Becomes Clearer

I hadn't really given Spectrobes much attention, but someone mentioned it to me, and there has recently been a bit of hype around it (mainly due to its March release). The game looks quite similar to Pokemon (raising and evolving creatures to battle against other creatures), but with a nice sci-fi twist to it. Here is the story:

Out on a routine mission, Planetary Patrol Officers Rallen and Jeena respond to a strange distress signal and discover the wreckage of an escape capsule in which an old man has been in a cryogenic sleep for decades. Once conscious, the man, whose name is Aldous, relays an unbelievable tale of the attack on his home planet by a vicious horde of creatures known as the Krawl. As a scientist, he was able to identify an extinct species of creatures called Spectrobes as the natural enemy of the Krawl, and developed a device based on the technology of the Ancients that could harness the power of the Spectrobes. Armed with this knowledge and the device he calls a Prizmod, Aldous sets out to gather as many Spectrobes as he can to stop the Krawl from destroying the universe.

Fearing the Krawl will soon migrate to their galaxy, Rallen and Jeena join forces with Aldous to seek out the Spectrobes and defeat the Krawl.

It seems pretty standard stuff, but what has really caught my eye is the utilisation of the DS's functions. You tap the screen to excavate the Spectrobes, and then blow away the dust, and shout at them to awaken them. There is a novel method of powering up, which involves tapping set patterns on the DS screen, using a card (presumably purchasable in packs) as a template. There is video after the break, which can illustrate these far better than I can!

It looks pretty impressive, and if the battling, and story is as much fun as Pokemon, it could be a real winner. I see that Disney is publishing it, and seems to be investing a fair sum of money in it. For more details, there is an official site.

I am actually surprised at how awesome that looks. I just wish they had shown more gamplay in the video rather than the CGI stuff, but it IS a game trailer, after all.
