Nintendo Updates Wii Firmware to 3.0U, Wii Shop Channel Updates

, , , , ,

Ah, what a wonderful surprise.

Earlier tonight, with my wonderful internet skillz, I found that a Wii System update was available. I went to download it, and boom it was done. The update summary said that it added "parental controls". I checked, and no new parental controls were added ... yet.

Very shortly after this, I heard that yet another Wii update was available, so I went to download it. This one, I was told, actually updated the system's firmware. So I went to download it, and this one wasn't so fast. It took over an hour for the update, and then I got an error code! Luckily, the update was fully installed before the error appeared, so I got all the goodies from it. Hit the jump for an (unofficial) changelog with everything I've detected.

And as you may have heard, the Wii Shop Channel was offline for a few hours today. That also underwent a major update, and you can view the (once again unofficial) changelog after the break.

This message has been updated with the official changelog from Nintendo. Check after the break for that

Wii Firmware Changelog:

-A digital clock was added above the date on the Wii Channels menu I don't like the clock, it seems off center and out of place to me...
-New disc channel animation was added
-The forecast channel icon now gives a representation of the local weather, straight from the Channel menu
-You can grab the globe and "twist" the Wii Remote to spin it in the News and Forecast channels
-Envelopes on the Wii Message Board are white instead of yellow
-You can rearrange your "Wii Friends"
-"Gameplay History" is now "Today's Accomplishments", lists a record of your Wii-Mails
-New countries added in the Forecast Channel
-Blue LED light stays lit longer when you insert a disc
-You now receive message notifications even when the Wii is turned on totally awesome
-Freeloader technology no longer works...
-AOSS Support added
-Overall system speed increased

Wii Shop Channel Changelog:
-You can view the most 'Popular Titles'
-You can view 'Recommended Titles'
-You can search by name, category, and developer
-Search by system and newest additions are still included

I'm sure I missed a couple of things, feel free to let us know if you find anything we missed! I'll be contacting Nintendo for an official changelog and will let you guys know what I hear.

Man I raced online after the update so I could post this, but you beat me...

I wish the font for the awesome new clock would match the Wii's system font...

Mine only took a couple of minutes to update. p

Shit. Freeloader gone?

Oh well. I only occasionally play One Piece, Alien Hominid is getting repetetive, I have newer Hawk games than AW, and I haven't touched Animal Crossing for years.

it took mine a few minutes to update. also if you were on at 1 in the morning the clock would look off center because of the thin profile the 1 takes up, also in led setups the one is not centered in its frame, it hugs the right wall

Took me 8 minutes to update.

wii.nintendo.com is my new favorite thing now.

That didn't happen to me. It must have been a glitch. Hmm.. makes me wonder if we were supposed to update it, before the blue light of delight glowed.

I found that a USB keyboard works on the Wii Message Board... It's odd that it doesn't work on the Internet Channel...

But testing out the new Keyboard support allowed me to reach what was never thought possible: The Wii Message character limit...
