N+ Review: Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games - Part 2

, , , ,

In celebration of the release of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games on the Wii, N+ are carrying out a special review. Three mods will be battling it out in 15 events over 5 days, to see who will be crowned N+ Olympic Champion. Through the magic of IRC, we'll be playing a selection of events, and awarding medals according to how we fair against each other. The contender with the most gold medals on Friday wins the glory!

During the week we'll be giving our thoughts on the game, and also giving you the chance to win a copy, courtesy of the very nice chaps at SEGA Europe. Details of this will be posted at the end of each day's events.

Day 2

Day 2 is upon us, and we're ready to get going. Can G-Off continue his dominance of the first day? Can seaempty maintain his comeback? Let's find out!

Event 4 - 110m Hurdles

The controls for hurdles are pretty much the same for the 110m sprint. The only difference being is that you have to press the B Button to jump the hurdles. Timing's critical, and if you leave it too late, you'll crash into the hurdle and slow right down.

G-Off's performance in the 100m sprint has him as the favourite for the hurdles. We know he's fast, but has he got the timing of the jumps? He's quick off the blocks, and sets a high standard. 12.590 seconds is the time to beat.

seaempty's pitiful performance in the 100m yesterday doesn't fill anyone with confidence for the hurdles. He gets going, and it seems the lad's been practicing. He narrowly makes it into the gold medal position with a time of 12.531 seconds. There's a Mexican wave going around the stadium.

LutherJW's the only person who can stop seaempty taking the gold. The tension builds around the stadium. He gets going, but it looks as though he's in for another tough day of events. His time is 13.770 seconds, and he gets another bronze.

seaempty claims his second gold medal.

Silver: G-Off
Bronze: LutherJW

Event 5 - Skeet

Skeet is clay-pigeon shooting, and is excellent fun. You have 8 turns at shooting clay discs from different positions in an arena. Before each round you have to steady your heartbeat, by pressing the B Button at a certain point on an onscreen heart. The closer you are to the centre, the bigger your gun sight will be. Once this has been established, you can get shooting. The clays come from either the left or right (or sometimes both together), and you have a set number of shots to destroy them. At the end of the 8 rounds your points are tallied up.

G-Off's eerily silent before this event. Is that a sign that this isn't his favourite event? Or is he being quietly confident. As the 8 turns takes a while to complete, seaempty and LutherJW have time to chat in the IRC channel. Their witty banter is interrupted by G-Off, revealing his score. It's 37. He only missed 3 clay pigeons, and it's going to be tough to beat. G-Off is now known as "Sniper Wolf".

seaempty gets shooting. He has trouble getting his heartbeat steady before each turn. If you get a "bad" heart rate, your target icon shrinks, making it harder to hit the targets. Get a "good", and it gets bigger. He only manages to hit 25 targets.

LutherJW hates skeet. It's looks impossible to get the gold, due to G-Off's mammoth total, but can he beat seaempty to the silver? He fails, and only manages to get 22.

Another gold for G-Off.

Event 6 - Javelin Throw

Throwing the javelin is similar to the long jump. Frantically move the Wii Remote and Nunchuk up and down to build up speed, and then flick up with the the Wii Remote to launch the javelin. If you flick up too late, however, your momentum will take you past the white line, giving you a foul throw.

After seeing his lead cut, G-Off seems confident after the last gold medal. His first javelin throw is nothing spectacular, however, only going 71.834 metres. His second is only slightly better at 74.248 metres. It seems he's throwing the javelin too early, but he manages to correct this in his final throw. It's loooooooong, and measures a huge 110.758 metres, getting him a new World Record. The crowd are stunned. He pulled that out of nowhere, and the other contenders are calling for a drugs test.

seaempty steps up. He needs a big throw to beat G-Off. This is not his favourite event, and his fist throw shows this. He flicks the remote too hard, and gets a bad throw, measuring only 67.263 metres. You can almost hear G-Off's chuckles. seaempty's second throw is good, however. Very good. It's a new personal best, and G-Off's looking nervous. 103.839 metres! But not enough to beat G-Off, who lets out a sigh of relief. Can seaempty improve with his final throw? Sadly, no. Not only is it a bad throw, but it's a foul throw, so he gets nothing.

LutherJW boasted before this event that he once got "110.8 something", and was ranked in the top 50 in the Wi-Fi tables. He has high hopes for getting his first gold, but can he perform under pressure? It appears not, as his first throw is foul. He makes his intentions clear with his second throw, getting a distance of 107.218 metres, ensuring seaempty gets the bronze. Can he steal gold from G-Off in the final throw? It's long... but not long enough. 109.896 metres is very good, but it's only silver for LutherJW.

G-Off takes the gold, and a sizable lead.

Silver: LutherJW

So that's the end of the second day. G-Off's still leading, and looking good to win the whole competition. Come back tomorrow for part 3!
