N+ Review: Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games - Part 3
By seaempty. Wednesday, November 21, 2007 4:46:55 PM
In celebration of the release of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games on the Wii, N+ are carrying out a special review. Three mods will be battling it out in 15 events over 5 days, to see who will be crowned N+ Olympic Champion. Through the magic of IRC, we'll be playing a selection of events, and awarding medals according to how we fair against each other. The contender with the most gold medals on Friday wins the glory!
During the week we'll be giving our thoughts on the game, and also giving you the chance to win a copy, courtesy of the very nice chaps at SEGA Europe. Details of this will be posted at the end of each day's events.

Day 3
We're almost at the half way stage, where championships can be won and lost. Can G-Off maintain his good form, or is there still hope for seaempty and LutherJW? Let's find out!
Event 7 - 100m Freestyle

It's the first swimming event! It's handled well in M&S, and each character has a different swimming style. This means that each character is controlled slightly differently. Some will need up-and-down waggling, others will need side-to-side etc. What's crucial is your stamina. You have a heart meter that empties as you swim. If you let it empty, you will stop for a second. You have to refill it, by holding down the B Button, and time it right and you get a boost.
G-Off gets things going, and despite not realising the the Mii character does the crawl (and therefore needs a certain action with the Wii Remote), he clocks a reasonable time of 51.538 seconds.
seaempty goes to start, but disaster strikes. He mistimes the dive, and ends up falling in, and starts slowly. He steadies himself and starts swimming smoothly. He gets a good kick-off at the half-way stage, and records a time of 49.507 seconds! He's out of breath, and has a slight head rush, but it was worth it to get in that gold medal position.
LutherJW is confident. He loves the swimming events, but plays down his chances. He dives in, but he was right to be confident. He annihilates seaempty's time, and finishes in 49.343 seconds.
G-Off comes in last for the first time, and LutherJW has his first gold. Is this a sign that the tide is turning? This competition is far from over.
100m Freestyle Results
Gold: Luther JW
Silver: seaempty
Bronze: G-Off
Event 8 - Triple Jump

This is almost the same as the long jump, although you have to flick the Wii Remote up to take the hop, then flick the Nunchuk to perform the skip, and then the Wii Remote again for the jump. Flick up too hard on any of them, and you get a bad jump.
All three competitors hate the triple jump. It's tough to get right, and getting a decent distance is hard. G-Off starts us off and gets a distance of 14.060 metres. Not very good, and it reiterates the difficulty of this discipline. His second jump measures 16.172 metres, which is a good jump. His last jump measures 14.066 metres, so the distance to beat is 16.172 metres.
seaempty's up, and his first jump is a corker. It measures 16.757 metres, and puts him into the lead. He reveals that he use to do the triple jump at school (but doesn't reveal how bad he was at it). His second jump is 15.920 metres, and his last is 15.983 metres. It doesn't matter - he looks on course for the gold, unless LutherJW can come up with something special.
LutherJW is known as "Triple-X" after this event. Not because he looks like Vin Diesel, or is super tough, but because he fouled on all three attempts. There are no words for this performance...
seaempty takes gold, and is making ground on G-Off.

Gold: seaempty
Silver: G-Off
Bronze: LutherJW
Event 9 - Trampoline
Trampoling is great fun. You have to do some timely flicks with the Wii Remote to reach a certain height, and then you have to perform sequences of button presses and remote twists to complete routines. The sequences get longer as time progresses, and you get rated on how long you lasted before missing a sequence, and how well you did them.
G-Off starts his routine well. It's a good game, and it's quite tough to complete all the sequences whilst in the air. G-Off doesn't miss any (i.e. does not fail to complete the sequence), but get's one bad (i.e. presses the wrong button in the sequence and corrects it). He gets a good score as a result: 9.247 out of 10.
seaempty's up, and does a great routine. It's clear that all those years of playing the trumpet have not gone to waste, as he displys excellent finger dexterity and timing. It would not be wrong to describe it as perfect, as he did not miss a single sequence. He gets a huge score of 9.978. G-Off's lead is in jeopardy.
Before the event started, LutherJW stating that he is "almost good" at trampolining. Let's face it, he can't do much worse than he has been doing so far!
His routine is very good. There is a high standard among the contenders, and he gets awarded the score of 9.827. That's good enough to take the silver, but seaempty takes the gold.Trampoline Results
Gold: seaempty
Silver: LutherJW
Bronze: G-Off
So that's the end of the third day. G-Off and seaempty are tied at the top, with LutherJW a long way behind in last place. Come back tomorrow for part 4 as things start to heat up.
Medal Table
G-Off: 4G-3S-2B (20 points)
seaempty: 4G-3S-2B (20 points)
LutherJW: 1G-3S-5B (14 points)
