Wi-Fi No Free-Free

, ,

It appears that Nintendo may start charging for certain online services in the future. Speaking at GDC Nintendo's Takashi Aoyama stated that a new service would be introduced that runs alongside the current WFC. It's called Wii Pay & Play, and will carry a red logo to contrast against the WFC's blue one. Through it Nintendo will be:

collecting fees for some services [that] will allow us to adapt flexibly.

I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I have to say I'm initially disappointed by this. I love the fact that Nintendo's online service is free, but judgment shouldn't be passed without knowing all the details. I think we'd all agree that there is room for improvement, and if paying for the service makes this happen, surely it's a good thing?

What are your thoughts? Will you be happy to pay to go online with the Wii and DS? Doesn't it contradict Nintendo's "gaming for all" philosophy, as I'm sure younger gamers won't be able to subscribe without parental assistance. If that's the case, is Nintendo targeting a more mature audience with this?

ill pass judgment without details i already pay Nintendo enough between games accessories and VC games they are making a grip (especially with VC downloads). I dont think theyre targeting anyone I believe theyre just trying to make money where they can, and since online gaming is the "thing to do" theyre gonna jump in our pockets. I for one wont pay for any service they throw at me ill take free without problem but ive been supporting these guys for 22 years and they cant give back a little? its bad enough their games are overpriced for what you get. Sorry Sea... im just ranting...
But i do believe a trial for these new services should be available for people so they can see what theyre paying for before hand.

The Last SheikahTheLastSheikah Friday, February 22, 2008 9:49:28 PM

I'm starting to think Nintendo are trying to be crap.

joseGOOFYSTAR Friday, February 22, 2008 10:48:57 PM

know if i read right we only have to pay if the game has a red coler wi-fi sign

AntonCaptainSeagull Friday, February 22, 2008 11:25:12 PM

Guys, way back when BEFORE we even had mario kart DS (the first wifi game) Nintendo said in a press release that they would not charge for NINTNEDO online play, but if a third party developer wanted to charge..... they COULD! this wasknown before it began, so if call of duty 5 or whatever comes out in the future and wants to make us pay, then thats up to the developer to decide. As far as Nintys stuff being free, i think it will last. I think if we see any payment to them for the WiFi service it will be something like downloadable content or something.

AntonCaptainSeagull Saturday, February 23, 2008 12:41:34 AM

ok, first of all, thank god were not sony fans, lets just pay EXTRA for the ability to even HOOK-UP four controllers, or now with PS3, we can pay EXTRA for the ability to use older memory cards (with not even a 100% working backwards compatibility). And on xbox, we have to pay 100 USD EXTRA to be able to make the system WiFi. Or we can pay 10 USD EXTRA with EVERY SINGLE GAME WE BUY! on both 360 or PS3, I do say, that if you buy 5 Wii games a year vs ps3 or 360, you average $50 savings on *gasp* a fifty dollar subscription (using xbox payments as a guide). I think if any Company here is saving you money (buy lets say packing in a game with the system, making it cost $200 cheaper off the bat, keeping all games to the lower price point, enabling the use of memory cards from GC on Wii off the bat, the ability to even use four controller ports BUILT IN), it is Nintendo. Saving you enough - I would say, to warrent the subscription to online.

OR you can pay 50 for the subscription, 100 for Wireless ability, 10 extra bucks per game. - What Im getting at here is if you want to play ONE game online ONE time wirelessly on the 360 you have to pay.....let me do the math.... $160 dollars. just watch the number grow with every game you want to play online,
two games - $170
three games - $180
etc...

I think if you wat to stop spending your money on Nintendo, then..... stop spending money on Nintendo, but if you think spending money on Nintendo is worth it, by all means do so. I don't think 600 dollars for a PS3 is worth it.

600(ps3 price) - 250(wii price) = 350. Spend THAT on your accessories and games. Or go ahead and buy the PS3 and buy 350 dollars in accessories and games, then tell me who you are spending too much money on.

Guys we ALL want everything nintendo makes to be free, even the Wii - wouldn't it be wonderful if we all owned everything? but lets get realistic.

yeah he has a point

MK-MK Saturday, February 23, 2008 3:55:37 AM

You know what... if the Pay and Play offers a better online experience--I'm all for it. I'd be willing to pay for online play if it means better service. I pay for XBOX Live [shock] and it is leagues above anything Nintendo has offered. Well, Metroid Prime Hunters was VERY close.

Dustin WilsonKhadgar Saturday, February 23, 2008 4:07:32 AM

I'm with MK. If it offers better online play I'm all for it. I used to play on Battle.net back in the day. With games getting more complex it's going to cost more and more for Ninty to serve online play. It's more to cover their costs than to dig into our pockets. I'm sure they'll price it to where they'll generally make a profit, but that's business. Let's wait until more details and such have arrived before passing judgment.

Ace Jon Saturday, February 23, 2008 11:00:28 AM

Yay, people who aren't stupid.

The guys on OneClick Wi-Fi are being absolute idiots about this. It's an option for some games that haven't been released. Yes, it's still "bad", but I'm guessing these games with PaP online will have online that's worth it, like some kind of awesome MMO or something. Nothing's being forced down our necks, because this is a game-to-game difference. Some will be free, others will want payment.

Adrianadrian p Saturday, February 23, 2008 2:10:02 PM

ok

ωєввѕтαя webbstar Saturday, February 23, 2008 5:45:14 PM

i hope we dont have to pay to play mario kart wii or smash bros ill be vry disapointed sad

AntonCaptainSeagull Saturday, February 23, 2008 5:51:49 PM

no. those two will be free online play.

MK-MK Saturday, February 23, 2008 5:52:25 PM

I'd totally pay for Phantasy Star Online for Wii. (cross fingers)

And I'm 100% sure that Smash Bros. and Mario Kart will remain free.

Adrianadrian p Saturday, February 23, 2008 5:54:09 PM

i think all the mario games that are wi-fi they are free the other games like shooting games u have to pay

ωєввѕтαя webbstar Sunday, February 24, 2008 12:15:58 AM

lol good i hope they r free that has made me happy just got home from work lol i am shatered !

Christopherdarth_1978 Sunday, February 24, 2008 1:13:46 AM

I don't mind paying a subscription fee. At least then I got the right to complain about service and quality. When it's free they can ignore your complaints, cause hey they're providing service as a courtesy and so you can't gripe since it free.

Alexodius PrimeAleksOD Sunday, February 24, 2008 7:21:33 PM

I won't mind if an MMORPG finally comes out for DS or Wii... In fact, I would become a subscriber right away!

AntonCaptainSeagull Monday, February 25, 2008 3:01:30 AM

Animal Crossing, that's where it's at!

Tonysmileyryder Monday, February 25, 2008 6:12:30 AM

I certainly don't want to pay on a game by game basis where I would have to "subscribe" each different game to play. IF it's a somewhat unified service where I pay one fee for any PAP game then it may be okay. Otherwise, no dice. I'm out.

I don't have a problem paying for online with the Wii as I'll be playing it a lot, it's not like my Live account where I only have silver because I only have a PC that I use LIVE on for one or two games.

AntonCaptainSeagull Monday, February 25, 2008 2:43:13 PM

yeah, dude. Game by Game basis - count me out too.

SpookSpook81 Monday, February 25, 2008 4:09:43 PM

I just read this too, and I toootally don't like it... but hey, it was to be expected; Nintendo's WIFI has been free for quite some time now and is falling behind in terms of operability to the other gaming networks, so if we want 'cool' features like voice chat, video conference, file sharing, and other abilities other networks offer, well, then I guess we have to pay... I'm glad they're keeping a free, basic version though...

Harry HockerKraid Tuesday, February 26, 2008 2:03:25 AM

i hope that if we have to pay, they will create a download channel that works sorta like iTunes (but less cost) and Windows media player put together.

ShadeShade302 Wednesday, February 27, 2008 3:38:23 AM

If it makes Online gaming better I'll pay! I had Xbox live for like 2 or 3 years and it had some of the best Online play so if Nintendo is trying to match that quality of online gaming then sign me up!

SpookSpook81 Wednesday, February 27, 2008 2:52:21 PM

Yeah Shade, I agree with you...but if they start collecting a per-game fee, like the newer versions of XBox live or the PS3 network, then it would TOTALLY suck... And again, I do hope they keep a free, basic version of the service...

Harry HockerKraid Thursday, February 28, 2008 11:52:09 PM

yeah...

VegaVegaTheTerrible Wednesday, March 26, 2008 5:04:58 PM

yea the idea of paying per game is saddening, especially for someone like me whos got 10 games going at once ill be paying 400 bucks a month to play online for an hour a week
if its a flat base like you pay ten bucks a month for unlimited play on these games then id consider it

ShadeShade302 Friday, May 9, 2008 2:40:09 PM

I think that " Nintendo " games will still be free but 3rd party games have the option to charge... I could be wrong but i could swear i read that somewhere...

AntonCaptainSeagull Friday, May 9, 2008 9:04:26 PM

Shade302: thats also what I swear i read somewhere too.

Ace Jon Friday, May 9, 2008 10:37:03 PM

Harry HockerKraid Monday, May 12, 2008 10:34:11 AM

i looked at the operations guide on the new NINTENDO CHANNEL, and it showed the different symbols and what they meant: a wii symbol, ds symbol, blue wifi symbol... but wait... a red wifi symbol! it said something about paying for wifi if the wifi symbol is red. scared
