Are Wii Ready?

Sooooooo theres this little game coming out in the US pretty soon right? I think it's called Super Mario Smash or something, that and another game later this year... what was it Mario Go Kart? anyway I happen to know that you are able to battle your friends over the internet with them if your Wii is connected either wirelessly or by a teather. I hope you all are connected! We are here to help you out though if you are not.

First, the check list:
Nintendo Wii
Highspeed Internet

You are almost ready to get smashed with friends or race with anyone over the net! All you need now is one piece of equipment. We will show you two different options on how to get yourself prepared, and they are not that expensive!

WIRELESS (WiFi)
The first, and easier option is to get a WiFi router! This baby transmits the fast internet connection you have running in your house into the air! YEP, your Wii is already ready to accept these airwaves and get going! First you are going to want to check out the list of routers Nintendo says most likely WONT work with your Wii, and AVOID them! I recommend getting the Netgear WPN824, I used it myself and it matches the Wii with white color, verticle stand-up option, and blue LEDs. Plus it works good, 7 internal antennaes to make-up for interfearance if some should arise!

Steps
  • What to shop for
  • Nintendo list of BAD routers
  • Buy Router
  • Set-up Router (instructions come with the router)
  • Turn on Wii
  • Go to Wii Options
  • Select: Wii Settings
  • Go to Page Two
  • Select: Internet
  • Select: Connection Settings
  • Choose any of the three connections
  • Select: Wirelss Connection
  • Select: Search for an Access Point
  • When your connection you set-up is found click on it, if you set-up a password when you installed the WiFi router you will need to put it in here, if you did not put on a password then your Wii will run a test, and you are ready!

Wireless Score Guide
N+ No cables running from router to Wii
N+ DS can also use this connection!
N+ Leaves the USB port on the Wii free
N- Possibility (though small) of interruptions from corless phones or microwaves
N- If Wii is too far from router, connection strength could be lower

WIRED
The "other" option to connecting to the net! With this connection you get a more reliable connection that wireless phones, and microwaves can't mess with (even though the interferance is minimal with wireless). Preforming this method requires that you buy a USB-style Ethernet adapter for the Wii. I recommend the Intec Wii Lan adapter. I use this method personally, and bought the dang this just for Smash Brothers! I want nothing to interupt my game! It is also white and has a blue LED to display connection working. It plugs into the back of the Wii, and comes with 5 feet of patch ethernet cable.

Steps
  • Buy Lan Adapter
  • Turn Wii OFF
  • Plug Adapter into the Wii
  • Run an ethernet cable from your highspeed internet modem OR WiFi router (if you already have one like me) to the Wii
  • Turn Wii on
  • Select: Wii Settings
  • Go to Page Two
  • Select: Internet
  • Select: Connection Settings
  • Choose any of the three connections
  • Select: Wired Connection
  • Select: Search for an Access Point
  • When your connection you set-up is found click on it, your Wii will run a test, and you are ready!

Wired Score Guide
N+ NO interruptions from cordless phones
N+ Strongest connection possible
N+ Less pricey than Wireless router
N- DS can't use this connection
N- Need to run a cable between the modem/router to the Wii

Buy the LAN adapter from Play-Asia | Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | GAME | Play.com

Nice guide, captain! So, do you guys have your Smash copy pre-ordered? (That is if you don't live in EU, of course...) Personally, I don't :S I guess I'll scout for it on Sunday... (I live in Mexico, so a copy IS bound to be available somewhere...)
BTW, if anyone living in the US is dying to get a Wii console but cannot find one (and you're willing to spend $450 rather than $250 for it), drive south of the border! Most stores have PLENTY on stock...

Actually I have a better idea! for smasher and/or Wii-withouters!

Sams Club will have a midnight launch (firs come first serve, no pre-orders) for smash AND will also have Wiis in stock for the event! The store I work at personally will have 30 Wii consoles. Call up your local sams (or walmart) to see whats goin on!

I can't go to the US...well, I can...but then I'd be too beaten up by the trip (4 hours + border time per way) and too exhausted to go to work on Monday (besides the fact that my hands would be burning up to play the game as soon as I get home... p)
I guess I'll have to pay 70 bucks instead of 50 (yeah, import taxes are a real bummer...) for the game... /me sighs and his wallet-buttock hurts...

hey how bout a NIntendo Wi-Fi USB Connector thats what i use for Wi-Fi

Geoff GirardinG-off Thursday, March 6, 2008 2:27:11 PM

GOOFYSTAR: I use the USB adapter too, but Cap'n didn't mention it because they've stopped making them.

No worries though, it will still provide an internet connection.

Wi-Fi USB adapter? How did it work? (Because I can't imagine this being FOR the Wii...unless you wanted to give your Wii a second WiFi antenna? O_o)

Geoff GirardinG-off Thursday, March 6, 2008 3:59:58 PM

It plugs into your computer's USB port and creates a wi-fi connection that the Wii hooks up to.

AntonCaptainSeagull Thursday, March 6, 2008 4:05:27 PM

The SAME EXACT one that the McDonalds have. It means there is also no set-up even, you just hook-up and go. but if you don't already have the USB thing, it's harder to get one because they don't make them anymore.

Heheh. Just my luck that my old router was one of the two Belkin ones that Nintendo doesn't like. Luckily, AOL have sent me a netgear, which looks like that one, but without a blue spot on top.

AntonCaptainSeagull Thursday, March 6, 2008 5:19:52 PM

as far as i know the netgear all work fine.

Before the Wii was launched Ninty actually had a list of routers they tested for the DS, and if i remember correctly the netgears were all at least 4 out of five, the one i have is a five.

The Last SheikahTheLastSheikah Thursday, March 6, 2008 6:10:35 PM

Mmm. Belkin and AOL isn't exactly a good combination.
