Memory Upgrade Options?

, , , , , , , ,

Many people complain about the tiny bit of internal memory the Wii has. Many people haven't run into any problems, I myself still feeling that the built in memory is decent, still feel really good with the 2 gig SD card. The problems arise for everyone though, that "one day" we are going to have to move things between the SD card and Wii, deleting and re-downloading VC games, and backing up our gamesaves on the SD card and deleting them off the Wii temporarily.

I think all games should allow direct reading and writing to SD cards, this would greatly improve things for a while. Especially if a simple downloadable update gave us the option to use higher capacity SD cards then 2G. I hear some of these things are getting near 8G! Another simple downloadable update could allow us to use one of the USB ports on the back of the Wii for Jump Drives, or better yet - External Hard Drives. Well Nintendo is beginning to look at options like this, as they do hear what their fans are asking for, and while i think they downlplay the amount of fans asking for it a little bit, it still isn't a huge issue - just yet.

Statistically speaking, it is true that there are a small number of customers who feel that the flash memory is too small, while many others find that they have plenty of memory. However, because this small number of people are none other than the most avid players, we know we have to review the best possible solution to eliminate their inconvenience.

- Satoru Iwata (President of Nintendo)

What are your thoughts? I think that if they let direct reading and writing to an external hard drive happen this would solve all problems. Hacking would become easier I am sure, but all Ninty needs to do is every once in a while release a software update that disables "popular mods" from working, thus rendering hackers time and money investments null.

Yeah while i have not have much problems itself but i can see the problems arising .

So i would be happy for a software update that lets me run the games from SD card as i goy a 2gb card for my Wii .
While there are 8gb cards out ther they are of the SDHC style which might means more than a software update (i could be wrong) .

While some people want hard drives but i think thats a bit overboard & possibly slow even .

Like you said in regards to hackers software updates should stop that as those updates allready stopped many chipped Wiis from working

Whlie many game are small but if you want N64 games they takes up nearly 200-300 blocks each .

Example Sin & Punishment about 290 blocks for the whole game while nes titles can be down to 60 blocks so there are a fair bit of difference plus with Wiiware comming up you see the problem .

While i want to download “Final Fantasy: my life as a king” & all its expansions but i might have to delete some files from my Wii .

If they allow booting off sd cards and/or hard drives, I will kiss each and every one of nintendo's employees.

Mario Kart brought my Wii to the storage brim. Curse you Mario Kart Channel! I've had to back-up two of my VC games onto an SD card and delete my Elebits file.

I would also make note that there are more and more games beginning to disable the ability to copy game data to an SD card. I don't know if it's the fact they have WIFI or Nintendo is afraid of the Twilight Hack--all I know is I can't copy my Smash Bros, Mario Kart, or Elebits data (I'm sure there's more).

One of the main reasons why Nintendo hasn't allowed any channels booting directly off an SD card [besides hacking/piracy] is that the read/write speed of the SD card slot is too slow. Whether or not that can be updated via firmware is beyond my knowledge.

Worse yet, apparently the DRM for the Virtual Console games has been cracked. Download, run the homebrew app that "assigns" the game to your console: bam! Stolen nostalgia.

I've been deleting my oldest games for a few months now. I probably have about 10 'invisible' games.

@mk
I never realised the Virtual Console been cracked allready by sick pirates .
I'm wondering how big is that Eleibits file ?
Piracy been around for many years & unfortunately still going around for many years to come .

While i can't remember the companys name itself but piracy had forced one company to shut down due to lost profits from piracy .
While there games are popular but unfortunately they are popular pirates & only a fraction of copys of those games are legal .
If those people are more willing to pay for the game tho company whould not need to shut down .
:frown:
While if the vc drm been cracked i be willing to download un update & redownloading every game to help combat piracy .
But unfortunately not too many people will be happy about it & Nintendo knows that so its unfortunately that would never happen .

MK: so I have to wait a second more while "saving game" or "loading game" happens, big deal. But i see what you mean when we are talking about VC games, although I picture it cting like a DS card, these games I am sure don't need to be read as fast as those, so I am sure it could be done.

oh, and if they made a funky shaped HDD to fit in the underside of the Wii stand, that would be swiit.

KawaiiPikachu: This just in, they just cracked WiiWare!

The Cap'n: Yeah, loading game saves off of an SD card wouldn't be an issue--but for some of the VC titles, it might be a problem. There are plenty of games that constantly stream data: mostly music files (or BLAST PROCESSING! RAWK!). It would take a lot of time and resources to prevent that from becoming an issue: the emulation software/firmware would have to be completely reworked, debugged to make sure systems won't crash, and reworked again to combat the oodles and OODLES of unsigned code that could become possible if channels could boot directly off of an SD card.

To be honest I doubt that reading from an SD card would impact the performance of VC titles as the speed of an SD card is still much faster than that of the consoles that the VC titles are originally from.

But I still vote for a HDD! P:

It would be nice for the Wii to be able to use 8gb SD card I would use it as extra storage and extra procesing power

I guess the whole memory issue will really become a problem once WiiWare kicks off... I'm currently OK with just the Wii memory and SD card for VC games...

@Chased4 it would be a nice idea bit i don't think it will work i could be wrong i thing the sdhc (4gb+ sd cards) needs more than a software update as mi do believe its a hardware issue as well .

But still i do want Nintendo to solve the problem as i allready deleted 2 games off my Wii as well as the expired Metroid Prime 3 preview channel .
I do admit that the 2 games i deleted of my Wii are games i didn't like thru they are still on my 2GB SD card .
I don't wont to turn into a clown & juggle all the files around .

BTW looks like i'm not the only one to prduce lenthy comments which is the reason why i got myself a usb keyboard for my Wii .
Imagine prudicing a lenthy comment like this on or the one at the top via the virtual keyboard .
Its time consumming & arkward thru i do admit to doing those sorts of comments via the virtual keyboard & its was the reason i was diterd from making leanthy comments & if i did have the usb keyboard back then i would be making those comments .
