MegaMan 9 Box Art

, ,

OK... I'm not exactly a fan of this 8-bit-retro-old-is-the-new-new deal, but I know it's a popular game. So here it is, a picture of the boxart for the game showcased at Capcom's E3 booth.

(Picture taken by 1UP's Jeremy Parish)

Why is this retro? Why is there a box cover for a WiiWare game? Why is this an 8-bit 'styled' game? The world will never know. All I know is that this blend of America's MegaMan and Europe's MegaMan 2 covers only fuels my suspicions about this game just being something that was left on the Capcom shelves, already programmed but never released, once the NES 'died' at the hands of the SNES.

Oh, yeah... and what on Earth is "Ultrasound Graphics Synthesis"?? And why would you advertise an "8-bit fidelity engine"?! There is NO fidelity in 8 bits!! (well, maybe there was 18 years ago...but not by today's standards!!!)

Big dawgBig Dawg Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:19:02 PM

mm9 could be an old unreleased game, but then again the boxart could just be for luz.

evaunit6 Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:39:03 PM

Great! Except that MM9 won't come in a box being that it's WiiWare...

Dustin WilsonKhadgar Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:40:45 PM

I don't really see what the fuss is over this cover. It just harkens back to the old covers and artwork created for the old Atari and NES games. It's probably just fluff created for the display anyway.

MelvinMelvin-Garcia Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:42:29 PM

I'm with Big Dawg and Spook81 i think it's a game that never came out. But, who knows.

SpookSpook81 Friday, July 18, 2008 2:58:03 AM

Khadgar: I guess that's the whole point of the cover (which, again, WAS just to show off at E3; I mean, it's WiiWare! There WON'T be a box!). If the game is retro, they had to have a retro cover as well. Still I find the MegaMan in the cover veeeeery creepy ¬.¬

Why im i thinking Tron ?
Why Why Why before i go mad .

It's back to the roots. He talks about it here:

Spook, the "8-bit fidelity engine" surely means that the game implements an audiovisual engine which is an accurate simulation of an 8-bit (ie. NES) Megaman installment. "Ultrasound graphics synthesis", though, is still something of a head-scratcher. smile

Dustin WilsonKhadgar Friday, July 18, 2008 3:30:15 PM

Yeah. Well, if something creeps you out it's usually a good thing not to look at it repeatedly. Considering you're older than I am I'm sure you remember the ridiculous covers of old.

Years ago when games were released in the US with overly cute or anime-style characterization American publishers in particular didn't think the artwork would appeal to gamers. They would hire an illustrator to do cover art for them, usually telling them only a cryptic description of what the game was even about. Not quite as frequently Europe would do the same.

It's just Capcom's way of poking fun at the old ridiculous Mega Man covers. It's not that big of a deal.

Haavardhaavard Friday, July 18, 2008 6:58:49 PM

Ah, the memories.

And if you think that boxart is creepy, maybe the Mega Man 2 boxard can heal your emotional scars:

I think it's ace. Like my Green Flashes, it's Retro Cool.

SpookSpook81 Friday, July 18, 2008 11:30:05 PM

Did Dustin just call me old??!! yikes :'(
OK, so I'm two years older (or three?...I'm an '81 model' p), but that doesn't mean I'm ooold!
(Someone bring me my Depends, please... hehehehehe)

Big dawgBig Dawg Friday, July 18, 2008 11:40:51 PM

no sea, those are hot flashes.

Pikachu Electronkawaiipikachu Saturday, July 19, 2008 1:49:21 AM

@Khadkar
The silly thing is a game is more likly to appeal to me if its got an overly cutsie or anime styled cover as opposed to a more serious cover .

But still i stikll trying to figure out why im thinking Tron .

God help me .

J. KingMTKnight Saturday, July 19, 2008 10:38:43 AM

I think the slight TRON vibe is thanks to the grids along the edges. smile

Spook, Khadgar was merely stating a fact: you're older than he is; so am I! But you're also older than me. knockout lol Does that make you old? ..... Why not? wink

Dustin WilsonKhadgar Saturday, July 19, 2008 2:09:49 PM

@kawaiipikachu: yeah we already knew that much bigsmile. More than likely you'll see a screenshot of the title screen when purchasing it on the Wii Shop Channel and not this "cover" art.

@Spook81: Nah not calling you old. Sea's older than you are... AND he's HITCHED... AND with a future enplusser on the way. He's the grandpa out of the mods here... and he's going to kill me for this.

SpookSpook81 Sunday, July 20, 2008 8:38:35 AM

But I'm still young at heart... (and according to my family and my boss, I'm still 15 o_O; don't know if they mean it in a good way or not ¬.¬ hehehe... oh, well... )

Patrik HansonZoodar Thursday, July 24, 2008 10:09:06 PM

Why does Megaman have an arm cannon AND a gun? That makes absolutely NO sense at all. And why does Megaman 9 have NES graphics and sounds when the 7th game was for SNES, and the 8th game was for PSOne. That doesn't make any sense either. Is that Wily, who looks like a mix between a zombie, Darth Vader and Terminator? confused

SpookSpook81 Friday, July 25, 2008 3:37:59 AM

Oh, yeah! And now they're gonna release T-Shirts and other memorabilia with this very box art on them o_O Seems like Capcom is REALLY trying to capitalize on this one...

haavard: I watched the movie clip, and it still didn't answered my question. down

Ooooh, and just you wait Zoodar... There's already buzz about OTHER game franchises who are willing to make a comeback in 2D, 8-bit glory; they say it's because staying true to their original roots is primordial, but in reality means that their leap to 3D or higher bit consoles was less than favorable. Also, the fact that building a 2D, 8-bit styled game is far cheaper than a current generation game.
Games who are apparently trying to do the very same thing they did with MegaMan 9 (and also because it's been so widely accepted) are games like Castelvania (since most people are NOT at all happy with it becoming a fighting game) and Contra.

Haavardhaavard Monday, July 28, 2008 1:01:56 PM

Zoodar: It does. They want to go back to the game's roots.

There actually is precedent for system retrograding: Rockman & Forte was released after Megaman 8, but was for the Super Famicom.
